Mogoeng to get swanky new office

2012-09-12 14:12

Johannesburg - Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng is to receive a new government department to run, dozens of staff, a personal assistant and 6 000m² of office space, The Star newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Renting of offices and staff hiring has already begun but the department's costs do not appear in the national budget, according to the newspaper.

The offices would be located near the Constitutional Court and would have 100 parking bays.

"The office of the chief justice was promulgated as a national department by the president in September 2010, and subsequently, a memorandum of understanding between the new department that is the office of the chief justice was signed back in January 2012," said Lulama Luti, spokesperson for the department.

"Essentially, the office of the chief justice has been set up to provide institutional independence of the judiciary and to render support to the chief justice in executing administrative and judicial powers and duties as head of the judiciary and head of the Constitutional Court," Luti was quoted by The Star as saying.

The department of public works did not respond to queries from the newspaper by late Tuesday night.

Staff included an executive relations and ceremonial management specialist, a parliamentary liaison co-ordinator, and a head of court systems.

Nine positions were advertised earlier this year, with the secretary general's salary being R1.4-R1.6m a year, and four deputy head positions, and a Constitutional Court manager being between R716 000 and R856 000.

Mogoeng would retain his offices at the Constitutional Court, apart from the new department, the newspaper reported.

    Good job creation - 2012-09-12 15:28

Unless your being sarcastic it seems you don't understand where the money comes for government jobs. It comes from the tax payer. So instead of private enterprise reinvesting this money it is put into an institution that does not assist with the economy. Basically the cost of this new office is a deadweight loss because the funds won't multiply throughout the economy. This results in a relative job loss because if the money was used in private enterprise more job would be created.

something suprizing/interesting with this news column, surely if the chief justice was white, we would not be reading all this crap, it was not going to be made public, rubbish.

sifiso - if he were white - i'd be equally angry. It's a waste of money that can be used to better this country, create job, build and maintain infrastructure, buy supplies for hospitals..... get your hateful head out of your hateful arse

Wow! South Africa must be the most prosperous country in the World! I must have imagined a country where striking mine workers are being shot because they demand biblical wages of R12500 per month, the majority of the nation lives in informal settlements/shoe boxes, the people growing food for the masses are being slaughtered, all people from all walks of life are being raped, murdered, hijacked and robbed blind... WOW ANC!!! You are amazing!!! I am amazed that with all the poverty, crime and inequalities you STILL manage to find huge amounts of money to fund this completely superfluous to requirements endeavour.
