Mahikeng - A woman and her 4-year-old son were killed when their car rolled near Mahikeng in the early hours of Monday morning, the North West public safety department said.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla, carrying his wife and three children, apparently tried to avoid stray animals on the R503 between Rooigrond and Danville shortly after midnight, spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said.

He lost control of the car and it overturned, flinging the mother, aged 34, and her son out. They died on the scene.

The 37-year-old husband and two other children, aged 1 and 16, were taken to the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital with serious injuries.

This is the 2nd fatal accident in as many days involving uncontrolled animals walking in the road. How hard can it be for a "civilizing" society to manage its livestock. Or does my right to be negligent with my cattle trump your right to a safe journey on the road paid for by your tax rands? For some reason that just does not seem sensible to me.

I used to live in Mafikeng, that particular stretch of road has always been deadly of a night time due to the same reason - collisions with cows etc. And it was always caused directly by villagers stealing the fencing the farmers put up to keep the animals out of the road.

Seat belt for Mom and booster seat for the child??? NO, of course not... WHY DON'T PARENTS STRAP THEIR CHILDREN IN?????

      stefan.vanderspuy - 2012-01-17 09:56

Yes. Poor Tshepo gets hammered for saying the same thing as Hoff!!

      TheWatcher - 2012-01-17 12:32

@stefan I agree poor form on the part of the commentators.

Sorry about that, but it could have been avoided. I know that area. Fences get stolen for scrap metal and the farmers cannot keep replacing them. Animals like the residual heat on the tarred roads and venture onto them. Along comes an unsuspecting driver and BAM! Avoid travelling at night - in the rural areas it's four-legged animals, and in the cities they are two-legged with guns. If you have to, be sure to have spotlights on and be VERY careful.

uncontrolled animals, potholes what happen to the owners of these animals and the guys in charge of the roads.i believe they should be held responsible.

  • TheWatcher - 2012-01-17 08:34

You should never swerve for anything except cows or other large animals. Although from the comments here I see that cattle on this road is a common problem so the poor woman probably had no choice.

My heart goes out to the remaining family xxx

My heart goes out to the remaining family. This is so terribly sad. Owners of animals that are found to be ont he roads and the cause of accidents should be charged and the family should sue them. This accident also highlights the importance of buckling up.

Tshepo is quite right. You cannot be flung out a car if you have a seatbelt on. And your child turns into a human cannon ball if not in a car seat! So sad but preventable!

Just come to show how fast we are moving backwards. The fences get stolen to sell as scrap metal, and in no time the animals strey into the roads, and major accidents happen. POTHOLES, UNCONTROLLIBLE ANIMALS, UNROADWORTHY VEHICLES, TAXIS AND A CORRUPT GOVERMENT!!!!!!!! HALLO AFRICA, TELL ME HOW YOU DOING.......

  • nanima - 2012-01-17 11:08

I don't want my friends death to be in vain and instead of breaking fences here. let us mend fences. what can be done on that stretch of road that is known for animals crossing that could have been preventable if there were fences.

Please dont be mistaken, religion does not say a person should speed for a funeral, and yes muslim prayer needs to be done. the prayer can happen without you, unless you the person that is delivering the prayer before the person is be burried. HOWEVER the most important aspect for friends and family is closure. closure for the living, the final farewell. we all are guilty of speed, speeding cos we late for work, or a meeting or even to get home and prepare dinner- meeting your friends and It is human reaction to speed if you late. blaming some1 cos there was not a seatbelt or a carseat is bein hurtful, look and learn- make sure you buckled and your kids are. nanima- sorry for your lost ..innaal.... we only born to die.
