Johannesburg - A woman and her daughter were killed during an attack at their home in Etwatwa, Daveyton, East Rand police said on Sunday.

Three men confronted a tenant, 19, at the house at gunpoint and forced her to open the gate around 20:00 on Saturday, said spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini.

They entered the house with her and found the house owner, Dina Masuku, 62, and her daughter Phumzile, 26, inside.

The men allegedly repeatedly raped Phumzile and the tenant.

"At this stage it cannot be confirmed whether the elderly woman was also raped," Dlamini said.

The men tied up Dina and Phumzile and covered their heads with plastic bags which they taped around their necks.

The tenant was threatened, tied up, blindfolded and locked up in a back room.

"In the early hours of the morning she untied herself and escaped through the window and alerted the neighbours."

Police arrived and found that the mother and daughter had suffocated.

The attackers fled the scene with two cellphones and a Volvo belonging to Phumzile's boyfriend. The car was later found in KwaThema.

One man, aged 31, was arrested, but the two others were still at large.

Cases of murder, rape and house robbery were opened.

I hope I am wrong, but something just doesn't feel right, I mean I am happy that the tenant survived this ordeal, but to have escaped from being tied up with a plastic bag taped over your head.. Sounds like a miracle. Condolences to the family of the elderly lady and her daughter who did not survive.

I agree something doesn't add up. And the daughter has 2 young children...

This si a sad story reported wrongly. This is my aunts daughter and her child who were killed. The girl who is reported to be a tenant is the girlfriend of the killer. You know sometimes reportes can report false statement. I saw Lungelo Yesterday at my sister's place but he reports the hearsay. The girl claimed to have been raped and after check up she was not raped and confessed to be part of the group who planned to murder my sister and daughter. So sad to see the two babies without thier mother or grandmother. My sister was very sweet, honest person since I was born and for her to die like that because of drug addicts?

What are the police doing to arrest the 2 others still at large!!!!!! And why has the tenant not been arrested, looks like the tenant is in this! R.I.P to the Mom and daughter, and condolences to their family and friends.

Absolutely sick and disgusting!!!! Rape is bad enough and then still to suffer suffocation! All for 2 cellphones! Hope the perpetrators suffer a slow painful death! Bring back the death penalty.

This girl is lying as she is a girlfriend of the guy who killed my sister and claimed that she was raped. She does not even stay in the main house. She was checked yesterday by the doctor who found out that she was not raped. How can they do that to my dear Sister and her daughter who were peace loving people. I am sure that they will be arrested. The car stolen was not the boyfriends but belonged to Phumzile and it was a POLO. May their Soul Rest In Peace

This is so appalling. For Lungile himself to give such rubbish info to the papers, yet he and his useless SAPS folks have not bothered to tell the family EXACTLY what happened to our family members. All reports that I have been reading are utterly false. Any sane person can see that this girl's side of the story just doesn't add up. I am absolutely disgusted by how the SAPS handled the situation yesterday, treating us like strangers yet these are our loved ones who were killed like dogs!! Needless to say, I have no faith in our justice system! Nonetheless, May aunt Dina + Phumie's soul Rest In Peace.#BeyondAnnoyed
