Mom distraught after boy's rugby death

Greytown - A KwaZulu-Natal mother is struggling to come to terms with the death of her son after he collapsed during a school rugby match.

Yavisth Seebadri, 13, was a healthy teenager who was not ill, said his mother, Sindy Radebe.

The Times reported that Yavisth was standing next to a scrum during a high school rugby match when he collapsed on Tuesday afternoon.

Radebe was battling to understand how her son had died.

“We still don’t know how he died,” she said.

“I can’t understand it.”

She said there had been a lot of blood as the ventilator had just been removed when she saw him.

She hoped to find out the cause of death from the post-mortem.

“I can’t begin to tell you how special my boy was,” an emotional Radebe told the newspaper.

I WISH schools would only play touch rugby and let club rugby be played at Club level if kids want to play. It is just as skillful but much safer!!! Condolences to the family - my heart bleeds for them.

Shelly, Really?? It is a contact sport, but for schools to play touch rugby and then expect guys to play full contact after school is ridiculous. Sport injuries and deaths do occur, but this could happen in a hockey match. You could get hit on the head in the wrong place. This could also not have been caused from rugby. A good friend of mine died because he had a loose valve in his heart, doctors would never have picked it up. Condolences to the family, such a terrible thing to happen!!

We dont even know if his death was directly caused by rugby......lets not jump into conclusions!!

Yes Shelly I agree, this boy was only 13. In New Zealand the schools play ripper rugby, which isn't contact, however when they are older within the high school then it becomes contact.

Stupid headline - of course the mom is "distraught" This is very sad for his family and friends. RIP young man.

Indeed - VERY TRASHY REPORTING!!!!! "Rugby death" implies autopsy has already attributed death to the contact sport - and no evidence of that in the report - and will there be a follow-up report post autopsy? Probably not sensational enough, particulalry if the child died of e.g. genetic aneurysm. Sympathy to the parents ...... but to News24 - elevate your standards please.
