2013-01-20 14:31

Johannesburg  - A 4-year-old boy died and his baby brother was seriously injured on Sunday when their car hit a pole in Boksburg, on the East Rand, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said a Toyota Auris was travelling on Rondebult Road towards Boksburg CBD when the accident happened at 10:15.

"It appears that at Comet Street, the children's mother, who was driving, lost control... and she crashed straight into the pole," she said.

Jackson said 27-year-old woman suffered minor injuries. Her 4-year old son died at the scene. His 20-month-old brother broke his leg and was taken to a hospital in Benoni.

"He has since been transferred to the Union Hospital in Alberton, where he remains in a stable but serious condition," she said.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

What a terrible way to start of a New Year with a death of a child. My sincerest condolences to the parents. If those children were strapped in, a serious investigation about the child seat industry's safety standards need to be conducted. If they were not, I am sure the mother will forever wonder "what if he was strapped in".

Very sad, how do you go on with life when something like this happens.

I had a stand off with my daughter refusing to let her into the front seat as her restraint was in the back (this was in the 70's). She eventually conceded and went into the back and strapped herself in. She is now a very aware mother

The boys were both strapped into their seats they are always strapped in. The car behind when the accident happend the women was a doctor took she took the boy out with his cars seat but it was too late when she tried to help him. It was a very unfortunate accident and as a family it's a very big loss. Please if you want to be judgemental and rude please do so in the privacy of your own home we definitely don't need to read how you feel and what you think should happen. I'm sure if the shoe was on the other foot you would also not want someone to make rude and judgemental comments. Rather pray for family and especially for Mommy, it's a hard road ahead for her.

Condolences to the family. A truly tragic event, and difficult enough to deal with without clueless, ignorant idiots apportioning blame and accusations of abuse without the facts. Those people should be banned from commenting.

very sad, and my condolences to the family. I have just driven past that area via the highway. There were several trucks and cars that have no idea what water does to traction.

Listen to all you bad mouths out there, unless you know the circumstances, don't speculate and make hurtfull comments, there is a family mourning out there - a child died and what if this happened to you and people made such callous comments like you were drunk or was on the phone - rather pray for that family to find comfort and peace in such times. May God bless this family and keep them safe and think of what that poor mother goes through I am a family member who has just retuned from hospital and I find your comments deeply offensive.I pray this never happens to you!

The little ones were strapped in. The smaller one asked his brother to change seats. They were very close. Rowen changed seats with his little brother. Rowen died and Aiden lives. Pray for them please
