Kimberley - A Northern Cape mother had to be treated for shock after her 13-month-old daughter was crushed by a truck in Galeshewe.

The truck apparently drove over a pavement, instantly killing Monica Rossouw as she played on the sidewalk, reported the Diamond Fields Advertiser.

The mother, Bianca Rossouw, 20, said the child was playing with other children in the front yard. She heard a scream and came running out of the house, finding her daughter’s blood-covered body between the front and rear wheels of the truck.

The child’s head had been crushed.

The child’s devastated mother went into a state of shock and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The victim's aunt Kehilwe Rossouw said the girl’s death was a terrible blow to the family.

“Monica was a free spirited child who enjoyed dancing. She was an active and street-wise girl who enjoyed laughing. Her cousins and friends will miss her dearly.”

The driver was said to have fled the scene shortly after the accident but reported to police on Thursday morning.

Police said a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.
