Mom jailed for setting son on fire

Cape Town - A woman from Delft who killed her 9-year-old son for smoking, was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the Western Cape High Court, it was reported on Friday.

The woman, who drenched her son with paraffin and set him on fire, was found guilty of murder and attempted murder, The Times reported.

After finding her two sons with cigarettes last year, she poured paraffin over them. The eldest ran away but the youngest was torched. He died in hospital six weeks later.

According to the report, the woman was strict and highly protective of her children and their smoking had upset her.

She apparently suffered from depression, and had attempted to take her life twice before. The woman was ordered to undergo counselling in prison.

The eldest son is in foster care and the department of social services in the Western Cape has been ordered to provide him with counselling.

Give her a handful of pills and let her take her own life. Burning to death must be the worst way to die and to have your own mother do it is beyond comprehension.

A handful of pills? No torch her to death so she knows what that poor kid went through.

So she killed her son for smoking, but the Irony here is that she also "smoked" her son, by drenching him with paraffin and setting him on fire. Questions to the heartless mother, What's worse: Having your son die of cancer or by your hands?

    11 Years for murder ?????? WTF !!!!!!!!

      emille.harmse - 2012-10-26 13:40

      Exactly. WTF!!!

    Murder and attempted murder...11years?? Wow!!

      scouter.fourone - 2012-10-26 10:30

Just what I was thinking, Johan - it's a joke.

I think we need to improve medical care so that mothers suffering from depression can be dealt with.

      lorain.maseko - 2012-10-26 10:13

But if mothers suffer from depression and kill their kids then they should be put out of their misery and be killed

      Sheilan.Clarke - 2012-10-26 10:21

That's exactly it. We need to treat the cause not the symptom.

      scouter.fourone - 2012-10-26 10:34

DezLee - no matter how demented, there is no excuse for this. We need to cut out all the philanthropic trendy excuses and get back to basics. This is a horrific crime committed by a horrific person - simple as that.

      emille.harmse - 2012-10-26 13:41

An ilness is no excuse for murder.

What the hell kind of "mother" is this?! The poor kid was nine years old, admittedly a bit young to be experimenting but geeze not worth being killed over?!!!! What a disgusting woman, I hope she is tortured in prison. And only 11 years- what kind of a pathetic sentence is that? Who were the judges?!

  • mokaikana - 2012-10-26 10:09

    11 years? What a joke?

  • delish7564 - 2012-10-26 10:22

I would guess the sentance is so short due to her depression. I most certainly don't condone her actions, however, depression is a horrible illness and can do strange things to the mind, BUT, if she had already attempted suicide twice, where were Social Services? Why was a better watch not being kept on her and her children? Where were other members of the family, friends? I can't even begin to imagine the pain this poor boy must have felt or the trauma his brother must be suffering, but help is needed. As a mother I too have very strict rules regarding smoking, but ............nothing is an excuse for taking the life of your child, and this woman will have to live with that for the rest of her life, however, long that may be.

      pokum - 2012-11-09 10:08

she will never be proper after this, no matter how much counceling there is in the world i dont think anyone comes back from killing their child...i like using the saying "I brought you into this world and i'll take you out of it" but at no point is it meant literaly...there is just something so deeply unatural about spilling your own blood..this is your baby i mean a hiding would have been more than enough but this was just plain evil

  • BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-10-26 10:28

Oh another SA Barbarian. Are these sickos ever taught the difference between right and wrong? Is it a concept beyond their comprehension?

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-10-26 10:40

11 years you must be joking, this bitch deserved the death sentence. May she suffer all hell as her little son did, depression is not an excuse to murder a child

  • jvwesthuizen1 - 2012-10-26 10:40

Poor woman, shame she had depression! Screw that, stop making psychology a joke. Stop justifying crimes with some sort of mental disorder. The child had his whole life in front of him. Life sentence for me without parole must be the answer(taking into account that the death penalty is not allowed)

  • JamesMWood - 2012-10-26 10:46

Forget the mother, think of the son who for years to come will battle coming to terms with his own mother trying to kill him, he's going to need a lot of help getting through this

11 years for setting a child on fire? She'll be out in 5 years on good behaviour. I am tired of people trying to use depression as an excuse for their behaviour. You're an adult so take control of your life. I don't like saying this but maybe some inmate gets depressed and shows her what justice is.

Careful kids, smoking can kill you.

  • becky.jamieson1 - 2012-10-26 11:44

Sick, worthless piece of scum... Douse her in paraffin and set her alight! I love my son WAAAAAAAAAAY to much to even have nightmares about such!

  • crystal.genis - 2012-10-26 11:49

Some people just don't deserve to have children or animals!!!!!

  • jeanette.herbst - 2012-10-26 14:30

What has this life gone to... I cannot help but think of how this poor child must have felt to have gone through that type of pain, his fear at that moment and the helplessness in his eyes. A child is supposed to look up to his mother/father for protection and comfort. Not to be the factor that you need to be protected from! Wonder if the 'depression' was just used as an excuse for extenuating circumstances and to reduce the jail sentence, her actions are inexcusable!

      pokum - 2012-11-09 10:14

it probably was, i mean many other manic depressive mother actually go and seek help...go into a practice or call a relative to say please help i think im going to do something horrible to my family or myself...the judge who fell for that was...well not very smart is the politest way i can put it
