Mom killed days after moving to new home

2013-02-08 10:00

Welkom - Only days after a Free State mother of two children moved into her new house in Riebeeckstad, Welkom, she was killed while unpacking boxes.

Carmen van der Westhuizen, 38, was attacked in the kitchen and her head was slashed open with an axe or panga. Her throat was also slit, reported Volksblad.

Her shocked husband, Pieter van der Westhuizen, found her body.

He said he was grateful that his children Dylan, 8, and Minette, 9, were in the car when he went into the house.

The family had just moved from Delareyville to Welkom for the husband’s work.

Workers were supposed to visit the house to look at the garden and pool but when the husband was unable to get his wife on the phone, he became worried. Then the school phoned him to say the children had not been fetched yet and he immediately left to get them.

An armed response security guard was also called and met the father at the house. He said when the husband came out of the house, he knew there was big trouble.

“He said I should go look in the kitchen. There I found his wife. It was not a pretty picture,” said Jan Engelbrecht.

The family’s two dogs had been locked up in an outside room.

Sapa reported that Free State police arrested a man in connection with the murder on Thursday night. He will appear in court soon.

and what did he get for murdering a woman, wife, mother? some cash? cowardly bastard!!!

  • Michael Hawthorne - 2013-02-08 10:18

CRIME ? MONEY ? POVERTY Its a sick cycle...

      gary.guy.507 - 2013-02-08 10:37

@Michael, u have got the cycle wrong. There are MANY countries that have much more poverty than our but FAR less violent crime. Tie the woman up and rob her and your cirlce works. Chop her head open with an axe and slit her throat and you have a South African circle.

      lisa.staden - 2013-02-08 12:00

I agree @Gary.guy.507, it has nothing to do with poverty when a group of people gang rape a girl. We cant use it as an excuse. Seriously we have to show them that the crime will fit the punishment. The longer we allow them to just get away with it (and just put them in a cushy jail) the more horrendous and violent the crime will be!! THE TIME HAS COME FOR US TO STAND TOGETHER AND FIGHT AGAINST THESE CRIMES!!

  • billy.preston.583 - 2013-02-08 10:28

I agree wholeheartedly - bring back the death penalty and hang the buggers in public on a Saturday morning downtown so that all can witness what crime costs!!!

  • karolina.dean.5 - 2013-02-08 10:29

The dogs are locked up and he kills her? Just one suspect arrested? Very seldom do these maggot cowards go alone - Something is not right here.

  • dienaakte.waarheid.7 - 2013-02-08 10:30

these things doesnt deserve to live...NONE of them.

  • peter.ndamase - 2013-02-08 10:32

To my fellow citizens, you are on your own. Do not expect the police oor some petty government policies to protect. Get out there with your fellow community members, patrol the streets. When you catch them, kill them. By doing so crime will be decreased and no one will ever enter your complex or area. Ranting and swearing at ANC will not save anybody's live tonight.

      Zohan.Steppingstone - 2013-02-08 12:16

Prowling the streets in groups and slaying people at random, sounds like a plan.

      rory.n.price - 2013-02-11 09:55

Peter agree, criminals know chances of bring caught remote, even less of ever being found guilty, they should be taken out.

  • donald.dykman - 2013-02-08 10:36

Just another in our beautiful country. This government can not deal with crime, because criminals are running the country.

  • bobo.simon2 - 2013-02-08 10:37

They must bring back death penalty

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-08 10:38

It is getting worse by the day. Where must it end?.

  • Beatricevanwyk.williams - 2013-02-08 10:38

Its so sad bt we can forget the death penalty not coming back too many of the countries leaders will then have to fry

  • ulandi.potgieter - 2013-02-08 10:39

I'm shocked you are no where safe really. You know people are to afraid to even say hello or even pass a comment because you don't know if they are going to bite your head off or even attack you. You know friendly costs a person nothing.

  • lvhukeya1 - 2013-02-08 11:22

we can talk as much as we wan't but there's nothing we gonna do. The only language dis so called hardened criminals can anderstand is death penalty.

  • Dylan - 2013-02-08 11:23

There is no safety for anyone in this sick country, and I say sick because there is a sickness prevailing in the moral fibre of the population living in SA. Not a single person is safe at home, not safe on the roads, not safe in police stations, not safe in hospitals... For crying out loud... When is this going to stop? When will there be a time we don't live in fear of murder, robbery, rape, reckless driving, lack of policing, lack of respect for the law? WHEN????

  • dimitar.kostov.1048 - 2013-02-08 11:24

    silent genocide

  • bee.deekay - 2013-02-08 11:26

Yea, big mistake employing these people off the streets, domestic workers, gardeners. I've lost count how many times my parents things were stolen by them. DONT employ these people! Ever!

  • sally.lewitt - 2013-02-08 11:31

OMW! This could of been you, me, your Mother, Sister, your Aunt, your Friend.. Those children have to grow up without a Mother.. How sad to start a new job and life and this tragedy strikes!!! Seems like violence and blatant murder are becoming a rule rather than an exception South Africa is fast becoming a gangsters paradise. The poor children of our land have to grow up in this criminal cesspool.. GONE are the days of Freedom for our kids in less than half a dozen years.

  • Dazza22 - 2013-02-08 11:36

It's NOT going to get better!!!

  • becky.jamieson1 - 2013-02-08 11:38

The only way all of this will stop is when all of us commenting on all these stories get up off our chairs and take our voices to the streets. Why sit at home commenting all day. Whats that going to achieve? I say lets set a date and take a stand for something thats worth fighting for. Instead of protesting the e-toll and eskom tarif hike we should be the voices for the people like Anene and Carmen who no longer have the ability. I'm done sitting around doing nothing, its time we stand up and fight! Fight for OUR country!!!!

      kyle.mclaren1 - 2013-02-08 11:51

Start an FB group. I'm also sick and tired of reading these stories and commenting all day. The people of SA sit behind keyboards and silently hope that this country will change. IT WILL NOT!! We need to mobilize people and take to the streets and bang on the doors of Luthuli House until our demands are met!

      stavious.mamatepa - 2013-02-08 15:36

@Becky i'm 100% behind you we must call for the return of the death penalty this thing of sentencing criminals to life in prison and release them after 5years is unfair. Criminals have right than their victims under this cANCer government. I'm also sick and tired of this every minute murders.

  • eyesears.handsfeet - 2013-02-08 11:39

Just another "crime" statistic, zuma? What was taken/stolen? RIP Carmen - All the best Pieter, Dylan, Minette.

      Eltorro - 2013-02-15 23:42

Only Cellphone stolen, his motive was rape

  • lynn.hattingh - 2013-02-08 11:47

Shelly I agree with all you have said and more. The question is who are they going to hang? These bastards will get off on a technicality if ever they are caught by our slapgat police. The police are too busy enriching themselves and arresting innocent people on trumped up charges, way too busy buying booze at the bottlestore using the police vans for transport! My heart bleeds for this country, but I am afraid we are farting against thunder!

  • dewaldt.duplessis.5 - 2013-02-08 11:51

F#ck RSG for saying this woman was stabbed! There is a big difference between getting stabbed than being hacked with a panga or an axe and throat slit! Its the same brutality that happened to ppor Anene Booysen. So plesae treat it exactly the same! Speak up mr.President.

      tersia.louw.12 - 2013-02-08 13:19

The president only speaks out if the crime was in the Western Cape.

      dewaldt.duplessis.5 - 2013-02-08 16:05

Unfortunately that's true Tersia. But I'm so sad and outraged by all this brutality that is happening in our beautiful country. I don't have any hope left we are done for.

      Eltorro - 2013-02-15 23:44

Thank you Dewalt! "Its the same brutality that happened to ppor Anene Booysen"

  • sikender.raidan - 2013-02-08 12:02

Some of our politicians were incarcerated by the apartheid regime, we all agree it was wrong. They should not equate their incarceration (political prisoner) to that of hard core criminals. It is time DEATH PENALTY should be introduced. The other obstacle to death penalty are certain organizations that give more rights to criminals then to innocent victims. When are they going to get a wake up call? When one of their own falls victim to criminals?

  • mphokazi.mhlontlo - 2013-02-08 13:35

I just can't stop crying from reading news today..From Anene to this

      thuli.matsile - 2013-02-08 16:31

Am looking for a house to buy and I have two kids.when I read this story I think I'll keep on living at my mums house

  • stavious.mamatepa - 2013-02-08 15:26

This is all Zuma's fault he is not doing enough to fight crime in this country. He must bring back the death penalty so that one can think twice before taking someone's life.

  • sam.aaron1 - 2013-02-08 15:30

This is not good. We are not safe here at Mzanzi for sho.

  • sam.aaron1 - 2013-02-08 15:43

It's because everything is under African National Criminals. ANC.

  • mornay.niekerk - 2013-02-08 15:55

The only thing that will stop this bastards is to bring back the death penalty,do not tell me that will not work. They kill because they want to go to prison, they will live like kings in prison compared to what they had.

  • Kalibanache - 2013-02-08 17:06

I am not sure what criteria is used when sourcing a police commissioner. I would start with some real simple exercises like while holding a basket ball ask if she can catch and throw it towards her nose! Will she put her hands up?, Is it alive I would first see, does it speak? Is it literate and what does he or she know about policing. Is our police commissioner able to do some simple puzzles never mind be an influence and lead of many many people. We should look into that. The last 3 commissioners was a washout, the current one since I heard last was going to study the situation or something, 7 months ago, never heard a word except some congratulations made. Are we all on candid camera ???

  • Rene du Toit - 2013-02-08 18:45

Zuma isnt doing zip about this, the police is so corrupt they're not lifting their asses. we have to take justice into our own hands, stand together and make it happen. start organising, start protecting ourselves. tomorrow any one of our friend or families could be killed for lunch money or be brutally raped. the death penalty wont come back, we have to humiliate the non-human bastards, make them rape each other, let them starve. prison is a hotel and death is too easy

      stavious.mamatepa - 2013-02-09 14:20

Police arrested one man in connection with the murder what else was they supose to do?

      tinus.fourie.12 - 2013-02-09 22:39

Stavious..... What else you ask? Prevent this from happening would be a good start! It's not just about this case, it's about the 30,000 murders every year!

  • bruce.gauld.5 - 2013-02-08 22:28

DEATH PENALTY!! Enough is Enough! Really!! Public execution!! To show us that the law in this country is ready to kill for us!! Its our country and our countries people!! We should be protected like a parent would protect their child!! DEATH PENALTY NOW!!

  • mammudi.makgaleng.3 - 2013-02-08 23:00

Our Justice System is very weak in SA and fails a lot in our communities. Is better for the community to tackle the criminals on the way it best suit them and crime will end. Mob community is the way to deal with cold hearted criminals.

  • josie.russell.10 - 2013-02-09 06:50

We have security on doors and windows. We have security alarm systems. We pay for security ARMED RESPONSE. We keep dogs to warn us when intruders come onto property. We can't shop we may get HIJACKED,RAPED,HELD UP IN SHOP,MUGGED or MURDERED. We can't sit in our gardens as they come over the walls. Driving into own driveway is 50/50 HIJACKED or MURDERED. This is SOUTH AFRICA 2013. Time to turn the lights off and GO.

  • Del Pearson - 2015-02-07 08:32

Even if the death penalty was brought back it wouldn't make a difference, the guilty are let out before the trial or cross the palms of the very people who should be protecting the innocent.

  • Harold Churchill - 2015-02-07 11:33

I prefer the old South Africa.
