Johannesburg - The mother of a disabled boy, who allegedly suffered severe damage during birth, is suing the Mpumalanga health department for R7m, the Sowetan newspaper reported on Monday.

Magaret Moremedi from Kwaggafontein near KwaMhlanga has alleged in papers served to the department and MEC Dikeledi Mahlangu that nurses who delivered the child - now eight years old - were "negligent and failed to follow proper procedures".

Moremedi claimed midwives at KwaMhlanga Hospital, who helped her give birth to Lindokuhle in 2003, had caused the boy's condition.

The department told the daily newspaper on Sunday that it was looking into the matter.

Well done, Magaret! I'm an occupational therapist, and I've seen so many cases of child disability due to mistakes by hospital staff, but the parents don't always know that they can take legal steps. Babies who were dropped on their heads (and sustained brain damage) by the doctors who delivered them, babies who had spinal cord injuries from lumbar punctures, etc... May this case lead to many more like it.
