Mom poisons self and kids after quarrel

Johannesburg - A woman and two of her sons died when she poisoned them at their home in Msento Village, Centane, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old woman collected them and a third son from school after an argument with her husband on Monday, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

"The sons aged 3, 9 and 10 went home with their mother where it is alleged she poisoned them before she poisoned herself," he said.

Her husband was alerted, but when he got there, the two older boys were already dead.

"The mother was rushed with the 3-year-old boy to Butterworth Hospital," said Manatha. The woman died in hospital on Tuesday morning. The 3-year-old boy was in critical condition.

Police had opened an inquest docket.

Manatha said a post mortem would be done to confirm the cause of the deaths.

"We hoped that she would survive so that she can tell us exactly what happened as it still believed that she poisoned her sons and herself due to the misunderstanding she had with her husband," he said.

What is wrong with these people! Can't we just be happy to be alive? Children are not possessions or social symbols, they're humans with every right to live as anyone else. WHY KILL THEM?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

      Malizba Liz Mhlanga - 2012-03-14 03:16

How could she do such a horrible thing?it is now a norm for these mothers to do this and its not Ayoba

I sincerely hope the 3 year old pulls through!..May God be with him.

Why do these cowards hit people? Why do men rape men and women? In our jails there is rape which is ignored by low down wardens. Are SA men all pansies that they rape men. Even worse that they rape women. Will we ever have a judicial system that protects the innocent and removes a criminal having any rights. Will the law ever be about nailing the thug or will it always be about creating a process so that the lawyer can bill big. The whole system needs a revamp.

      Jacqueline - 2012-03-14 06:43

Although I agree with what you said Kevin, what does rape have to do with a woman poisoning herself and her 3 kids? Just wondering.

      Pharaoh Malope - 2012-03-14 06:46

Kevin, are you commenting on the poisoning article?

I am not a mother, but I guess the thought of leaving her children with an abusive father, or good for nothing man, just made her want to take her kids with her! Unfortunately man can b such animals, not knowing the fate of her kids if she leaves them with this man, most probably she was thinking her children will suffer under the care of this man, and might even turn out to b street kids, or robbers... If there is anyone to blame, it's her husband! For driving her to do this horrible thing!!!

      Whispers4life - 2012-03-14 07:44

If it was so horrible then she could have moved in with family and not taken the lives of her children... there are so many solutions in life today but taking your own life and that of your children is the most selfish thing that could ever be done... This discussion can be so indepth but i would love to know what weak mindset must you be in to take your own life?

      DayanGovender - 2012-03-14 07:48

I agree that the men of today are irresponsible and a whole lot more, but we cannot blame this man for what is wife did or set the blame entirely at his door. Irrespective of the situation her children had the right to live - and she took that right away - we don't know what the future holds for anyone so we can also not say her kids would have turned out bad.

      Silvana - 2012-03-14 07:48

#Nada We don't really know what really happened. It's the husbands word against?????? Who's to say that he didn't put poison in their food/drink? Either way it's a tragedy.

      Moi - 2012-03-14 07:59

Please re-read the article. No where does it say that the husband was abusive etc... it simply says that they had had an argument. There is no excuse for this heinous act.

      Azmeena - 2012-03-14 08:09

I think you should re read the article. It does not mention anything about the husband being abusive. It just mentions that they had an argument. To kill yourself and helpless children is the cowards way out. You can not blame the man here. I do agree that there are abusive men out there but do not class all men in that category. There are some very good men out there. It was the woman's choice to kill the children

      LindiBleu - 2012-03-14 09:15

There are some good men out there. it's not our fault that we have yet to meet them. I dont know what the argument was about, but as a single parent, were I to consider suicide, I would take my kids with me. some would say I would be violating their human rights, but without love, most kids are screwed. all you have to do is take a walk in the hood and see that the nyaope addicts are not the poorest of the poor, but those whose parents are not there for them. I would not leave my children to an uncertain future, especially when we know how easy it is for men to abandon their offspring. in this case, I blame nobody.

      mokheled - 2012-03-14 09:20

No matter what u say about us( Man) it does not give that woman the right to kill his kids, why dnt she kill herself and leave the husband with the kids cos obviously she had no sense to live. Blame the husband please man get over yourself.

      yolie.Landa - 2012-03-14 09:41

'ABUSIVE'??? its not mentioned he was, all we see is there was an argument. How did she manage to be wt him for these many years? Let alone still give him 3 children?

      modumo - 2012-03-14 10:42

@Nada, this evil deed has no excuse at all, you can not excuse it no matter the circumstances. She should have had the moral fibre to leave her chilren to enjoy their life, whether it be with relatives. Maybe you venting your own male frustrations out on this situation. #SMH

      Dries - 2012-03-14 11:53

      She should have poisoned him...

      Jo.Davies123 - 2012-10-19 09:42

Wait before we judge. There are no reports that the husband was abusive. There is an indication of a misunderstanding. Even still, if it does turn out that he is a violent person, she had no right to kill these kids.

  • Shaun Robinson - 2012-03-14 07:38

    Fight little one, fight...

  • Silvana - 2012-03-14 07:45

Frikking hell! That must have been one hell of a "misunderstanding" that you resort to killing yourself and your children. Pity she didn't survive to tell her side of the story. Hope the little one makes it.

  • ItsJustaRide - 2012-03-14 07:45

  • Moi - 2012-03-14 07:56

Absolutely tragic. Some people should never be allowed to have children. RIP little ones.

  • Chubekile Khayakazi CK Ntloko - 2012-03-14 08:02

To think that there are women that can't even have kids and yet those that do,fail to play the role of being a mother is sad. This story is tragic and with no surprise from the Eastern Cape.

  • Antipoaching - 2012-03-14 08:28

Not as unusual an occurrence as one would like to think. There have been a number of cases in SA in the last few years, the "logic" is similar to that in family murders, "life is so terrible that the kids can't be left to suffer" I quote from a review done for Stellenbosch Uni "Researchrs concluded that mothers kill because the chidl is unwanted; out of mercy; as a result of mental illness; retaliation against a spouse or partner; as a result of abuse; to punish themselves; anger at themselves or to destroy what they have created; or to "erase" in order to pursue a new relationship." In SA in the past few years these mothers have tended to NOT get much sympathy from the Courts as was the case of a Uitnehage mother who killed her child and then failed in her suicide attempt, she got, I think, a life sentence

      Antipoaching - 2012-03-14 08:38

Apologies she got 20 years "Daya escaped a life sentence after Liebenberg found that, even though the murders were premeditated and planned, there were substantial and compelling circumstances justifying a lesser sentence than life. He said Daya had suffered a 'minor degree' of diminished responsibility at the time of the murders."

  • Aretha - 2012-03-14 09:28

I do not understand how can a person decide to end someone else's life just because they life is screwed, those children had a right to live. Damn this woman i wish she had survived so that she can live and suffer the consequences

  • Neville - 2012-03-14 10:26

This woman must have a long time of abuse , REAL MEN DO NOT ABUSE WOMAN AND CHILDREN PERIOD

      Moi - 2012-03-14 10:49

Why do you assume that she was abused??

  • Econwald - 2012-03-14 10:40
