Mom shot in the face, tried calling for help

2012-08-14 09:09

Pretoria - A woman who was attacked by a trio of robbers minutes after dropping her son off at school tried calling for help but was unable to speak on the phone after they shot her in the face.

Ronél van Eyk, 46, was shot three times, and one of the bullets hit her in the face, reported Beeld.

As she lay bleeding near the farm gate in Hartbeesfontein in the North West, she tried calling a neighbour, Jurie Fourie.

Fourie said he was eating breakfast when his phone rang just after 08:00.

“It was Ronél. She was just making sounds. I called back and the cellphone rang. Ronél picked it up and again just made choking sounds.”

Fourie and a friend rushed to the farm where they found Van Eyk, still alive, at the gate. They called for help but Van Eyk died on the way to hospital.

Van Eyk’s husband, Fred, was not at home at the time. Their eldest son, Nardus, 21 was in Johannesburg for training.

“It’s very hard on Freddie. He doesn’t understand and misses her already,” said Nardus of his younger brother Freddie, 9.

The robbers got away with Van Eyk’s car, which was later found deserted near Coligny.

What are we going to do...

      bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-08-14 10:51

Strike as from October 1st, no mortgage payment, do0n't pay electricity and best of all no tax, in three months the country will be on it's knee's and the strength of the non ANC population will be felt, either that or continue down the slippery slope to the end.

  • amos.motsai - 2012-08-14 09:40

Wish those thugs get arrested and rot in jail they don't deserve to be on the street. No one have a right to take somebody life

Death penalty only solution for these cruel animals in our country.

      ethel.sleith - 2012-08-14 10:48

Animals don't kill for the sake of killing, so don't liken these individuals to animals.

Condolences to the family. Really sad. Every morning I wake up and thank the Lord that me and my family are not another statistic. This is not how we are supposed to live our lives. Crime in SA is a huge problem but like with everything else the problem just becoming part of the process. SICK!

  • tendai.s.machiridza - 2012-08-14 10:24

That's South Africa for you. Do your leaders read these stories or even newspapers????? Your new Commissioner ( I don't know why I even used a capital c) is singing hillstreet blues from the comfort of her office, from there goes home under tight security and murder this and rape that is like a fairy tale to her and her colleagues. I think they think it's not happening. Maybe if one of their own is like sons, daughters, mothers even themselves are mugged, raped, murdered or maimed they will raise an eyebrow but hey it can't happen coz they're even under guard even when they are in the toliet...Shame on these fat cats in the top echelons of power..I do not condone apartheid but why were there no trigger happy and lusty pimps in those days....Freedom is not freedom when people still fear to walk freely, assemble freely, party freely, drive freely, have no access to essentials etc whilst the gov guys are shining like a new pair of police leather shoes...God help the poor souls and condemn the powerful brainless...

  • freddy.vandenheever.3 - 2012-08-14 10:24

Ronel Van Eyk 46, Defenseless woman, wife and mother, was shot three times, one of the bullets hit her in the face. This happened on her farm in Hartbeesfontein in the North West this morning. Anger, frustration and helplessness builds up inside of us as we hear these stories on an almost daily basis.... at the inadequacies of our policing system where thieves and killers act with impunity knowing that the chance of them being brought to justice is unlikely. Three of them, why not just take the car, why did they have to shoot her. They are instilling fear in the farming community and general population, trying to drive our farmers off their land. We live in fear every day, praying that this is not going to happen to any of our family and friends. So be alert & vigilant when entering and leaving your home as that is when we are most at risk. Sincere condolences to this family and all the others, black and white that have suffered unnecessary loss ...... friends and family.

  • sandra.casillidunn - 2012-08-14 10:28

    How senseless

  • fatima.shaikjee - 2012-08-14 10:34

This is so so sad... The government doesn't care... And yest headlined that many south africans relocating overseas...obviously...that's what I plan to do soon... And all because I feel terrified to live in this country and let my son grow up behind walls where he could be free... And because of the education system, health system, and ofcourse teachers get paid huge salaries with paid housing...where people are actually appreciated.... What has south africa to offer? Crime, bribey, corruption, failing in all systems, taxed so much to build zumaville and ministers overseas holidays, horrible public service from homeaffairs to everything else... And the list can go on... May god grant her family strength to get through this horrible incident and may those animals be caught....

  • kevin.pitzer - 2012-08-14 10:37

Thumbs down for this barbaric and senseless act....So sad !!!!

  • Ratfink66 - 2012-08-14 10:37

It took 3 men armed with weapons to steal a vehicle from a middle-aged woman. Cowardly bastards. A curse on their families.

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-08-14 11:02

A trio 3 men against 1 harmless woman. come on if they wanted her car they could have pulled her out and driven away. I hope when they are found that they get put in jail and rot. Hope this woman comes back to haunt them until the day they die. bastards. If they go to jail I suppose they will get a pardon like the rest of them were given another chance. This just was'nt for her car, there seems to be a conspiracy going on and people are being targeted if not for their farms its for their business.

  • beki.khumalo - 2012-08-14 11:17
