Cape Town - A Cape Town woman has placed an ad on Gumtree looking for someone to adopt her baby.

According to Eyewitness News, the woman states that she wants to give up her baby at birth due to financial reasons and school commitments.

The Kuils River woman is 24-years-old and two months pregnant.

The ad has already received 50 visits. It was unclear on Tuesday morning if the ad was still on the classifieds website.

However, officials from the Western Cape social development department said the ad was illegal and that the Children’s Act prohibits parents from putting children up for adoption in the media.

MEC Albert Fritz said if the mother wanted to give up the baby for adoption, she had to go through the department.

“She will not be paid for giving the child up for adoption. The Adoption Act does however make provisions for reasonable medical expenses pertaining to the pregnancy if you follow the proper channels.”

Attempts to contact the woman were not successful.
