Mom who left kids in car due in court

2011-12-12 11:15

Johannesburg - A 34-year-old woman who allegedly left her two children inside a locked car at shopping centre is expected to appear in Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The woman arrived at River Square Mall with four children at 14:00 on Thursday, leaving a 6-month-old baby and 2-year-old in the car, Captain Shado Mashobane.

Car guards alerted paramedics who had to break the window of her black BMW to rescue the two severely dehydrated children.

"They were running short of oxygen," Mashobane said.

The woman returned and allegedly hit a police officer upon seeing the broken window.

The children were rushed to Midvaal hospital for medical check-up and were later released to their father and grandmother.

The woman was charged with child neglect, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

She spent the weekend in police cells while the children were released into their grandparents' custody.

good, it will teach you to treat your children like children! i have no respect for people like this. :)

      methedex - 2011-12-12 11:38

they gonna mess her up! Justice!

      Go - 2011-12-12 12:38

Good work by the Car guards, mothers like this dont deserve to have children!!!

      JohnnyBGood - 2011-12-12 12:52

@Go, hats to the car guards!!! First time I hear something good from them. I cant believe someone would leave their kids in a car. Apart from the damn heat, what if someone were to steal them, WTF, seriously, WTF ?

      Myancmyfuture - 2011-12-12 16:52

Credit must also go to the car guards, they are the heroes

      Chum Scrubber - 2011-12-12 17:45

Johnny, what bad experiences have you had with car guards? "First time I hear something good from them". I can't think of any, and I deal with them a lot?

      Donovan - 2011-12-12 21:17

Yes yes, but let's not forget that depriving children of a mother (even though she most certainly did something bloody stupid) is also not exactly an ideal situation.

      George - 2011-12-13 06:58

Donovan, with you only having a couple of brain cells would explain your comment. What would you rather have, dead kids or kids that could be brought up by others, absolute no brainer.

      Donovan - 2011-12-13 21:29

That's a little unfair, Peter. Read what I said 'Depriving children of a mother is not exactly ideal'. Mother is the name for god on the lips and hearts of children. Sure this person made an enormous mistake, but surely it is better that she learns from it and doesn't repeat it rather than be thrown to the wolves, not for her sake, but for that of her children?

      Donovan - 2011-12-13 21:31

Sorry, that was meant for George, not Peter. And the quote is from William Makepeace Thackeray.

  • Tina - 2011-12-12 11:25

Good that they locked her up! How can you leave them in the car or any where unattended...Is she normal?

      Kala - 2011-12-12 11:45

It amazes me how human beings are capable of defying logic. The mother should be locked in a hot car for a week end before going to court.

  • Jerolan - 2011-12-12 11:33

i hope her experience in jail will have enlightened her. Still though she needs to spend more time in jail to pay for her crime and sins

  • Janice - 2011-12-12 11:33

I hope she gets what is due to her!!! NO OXYGEN!!!!!

  • - 2011-12-12 11:35

Good.... hope those poor babies are OK and feeling better....

  • Azande - 2011-12-12 11:35

Something they forgot to do, send her for a mental test. No sane parent can leave a six months old baby unattended in car in a hot day.

      vlarismam - 2011-12-12 11:47

Agree - but that might also open the pandora's medical box of excuses so useful to criminals these days! - 2011-12-12 11:54

I agree... and not even just on a hot day, any day period!

  • Gary - 2011-12-12 11:53

allegedly????............they were left in the car by the mother. It's a done deal.

      Brian - 2011-12-12 12:17

I have to agree with you gary our country is way too PC its making everyone flaccid

  • Aubrey - 2011-12-12 11:57

whats the name of this inbecile.

      fredahsm - 2011-12-12 14:04

@Braam, Is that the woman's full names & surname? Didn't think so Stop being an idiot, I am a black woman with two kids aged 11 & 5 and will never lock them in a car, this has nothing to do with the race of a stupid so called mother. There always stories of mothers locking kids in vehicles all across all races, but that is not the issue. She is just blatant stupid woman, who deserves to be locked away like the way she locked those poor kids, she deserves NO MERCY!

      sam.swanpoel - 2011-12-12 14:08

Aubrey they should post a photo with full name and address in all the news media also on fb so we can see what kind of animal she is.

      Azande - 2011-12-12 14:54

I heard the woman's name is Christie du Toit, she's a baby sitter to one wealthy BEE dude in Sandton. Part of her benefits is accomodation in a cottage flat in the guy's backyard, she stays with her two kids whom she left in the car.

      Jacqueline - 2011-12-12 18:47

@Azande: Since this happened in VEREENIGING, I doubt your information is correct. Midvaal is in the Vaal Triangle. Quite a ways from Sandton.

      Jane - 2011-12-13 12:58

Azande get your facts straight before you falsely accuse people of child abuse. Her name is Shelly Khumalo Not Christie du Toit!

  • satanslord - 2011-12-12 12:06

No bail and a few more weeks in jail.

  • Lindsay - 2011-12-12 12:06

What is wrong with this woman???? Obviously not fit to be a parent, thank goodness they are ok.

  • RSole - 2011-12-12 12:16

They should lock her in the car in the sun and throw away the key.

  • Molatelo - 2011-12-12 12:25

On top of it all that she punches a cop for breaking her window to save HER kids. Seems she was more concerned about her car than she was about her kids's lives. Some people should just not be allowed to breed.

  • Kerry - 2011-12-12 12:26

Good. Hopefully you wont just get a slap on the wrist. How thick are you.STUPID

  • chillepeppa - 2011-12-12 12:27

I have heard too many horror stories of 2 y/o left in the car, and what happened when they managed to get out as well. She seriously needs to reassess her priorities.

  • mukhtarm - 2011-12-12 12:39

Very sad! I saw something similar on Saturday at Grand West Casino, where a severely handicapped person was left in a locked car, with closed windows, while the parents were gambling away! The security guards tried opening the car and had a showdown with the irate parents! Cannot believe what people are capable of!!

  • Micheal - 2011-12-12 12:51

just when i think you cant get any dumber, sum1 proves me wrong! how the F*&^ can you leave a SIX MONTH old baby with a 2 year old toddler in a car?!?!?! i dont know if sending her to jail will help or not ( taking a mother away from such young children cant be good ) but she cant get off with this lightly

  • reuben.naidoo - 2011-12-12 12:57

I always knew that BMW Drivers were ignorant and stupid.

      TheOneThatKnows - 2011-12-12 13:05

@Reuben.naidoo - It's got nothing to do with the car you drive. Comments like that make me think you are just as dumb!

      Micheal - 2011-12-12 13:09

um noooooo...i pretty much agree with reuben. i know its a daft generalization but most of the BMW drivers if seen, drive like monkies ( an my girl friend wants a BMW, i said she can forget bout it ) like on saturday i had to take a client to the airport at 03:00 in da morning. low and behold there was a huge accident with a dead BMW driver...he was trying to race another car

      satanslord - 2011-12-12 13:34

@reuben,I’d insult you,but I was raised not to make fun of the mentally challenged.

      Janice - 2011-12-12 13:58

im no BMW fan, but that is a stupid comment!!!

      Azande - 2011-12-12 14:45

@reuben, please dude. @Braam, u are extremely high from yo business product, dagga. @Michael, don't u think "leaving" a bmw and "driving" a bmw are two different things. Yo example about the "race" is irrelevant.

      Bart - 2011-12-12 16:08

      you are an idiot

      George - 2011-12-13 07:03

Its normally the Naaidoos, Mukerjees and the Saravanans (Indian boy racers) that cause all the accidents with their souped up citi golfs (bwaahhaahaaa) and the pathetic sound systems playing Bollywood hits, not the BMW drivers.

  • Lisa - 2011-12-12 13:16

they should lock that bitch in her hot BMW and just leave her there to die of dehydration!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • CopperWoody - 2011-12-12 13:16

The same should apply to these stupid people who leave animals in cars in the blistering heat, with a "concience cleansing" 2 cm gap in the window for air! DISPICABLE!!

  • RobertaKeeling - 2011-12-12 13:18

So instead of worrying about the wealfare of her childeren, the Meddem threw a tantrum because the window of her BM was broken to help her children. She's not fit to be a mother. And hopefully she'll get hammered for assaulting police officer.

  • Peter - 2011-12-12 13:59

How do you 'allegedly' leave kids in a car, but they definitely were dehydrated? She definitely left the kids in the car. The point is whether she did it on purpose or accident. Can we please stop being so pathetically politically correct?

      annemarie.auret - 2011-12-29 22:46

How does a mother ACCIDENTLY forget her kids in the car in the blazing sun?

  • sam.swanpoel - 2011-12-12 14:04

She a mother? I very much doubt that. Lock her away and throw the keys down the drain.

  • Katoolsie - 2011-12-12 14:06

omg..she does that and then she still hits a police officer because he was trying to rescue the kids. Lock her up in a hot car for a few hours!

  • sudhir.hira - 2011-12-12 15:06

They should have locked her up in her car during instead of jail! Stupid woman.

  • richard.galpin - 2011-12-12 15:16

I would like to have an expert opinion regarding the probable temperature inside a black car and the rate that the temperature increases. This horifying data may give all a huge wakeup call as to the possible dangers like brain injury (Perminent) probable death also perminent etc. etc

      Jacqueline - 2011-12-12 18:50

If you read the first article when the story first hit the news, they do have information about that as the temp starts to rise within 10 minutes of standing in the sun.

  • stevefortuin - 2011-12-12 15:23

No mention of what kind of BMW it was? I'm sure her hands where too busy holding her LV clutch and Gucci shades to manage taking her kids inside with her. #newgenerationparents.

  • acsteyn - 2011-12-12 15:33

Not any difference between her and the dog abuser. Perhaps they the same people in a different life-time. Or. she is just plain stupid.

  • Michelle - 2011-12-12 15:43

Again that friggin' word "alledgedly". There are no ifs, buts, or maybe's. She left her children in the car and slapped the cop!! Nobody is insinuating that she did it!! She's guilty and should be locked up and her children taken away!!

  • Ma - 2011-12-12 17:23

This is bordering on Insane Behaviour!!!

  • TheWatcher - 2011-12-12 18:10

Finally stupidity and neglect brought before the court.

  • barry.mcbride - 2011-12-12 18:48

No matter how strongly she felt about her 'irreplaceable' car window, it’s never a good idea to resist arrest and/or assault a police officer, which in one sense could be compared to digging your own grave!

  • Adair - 2011-12-12 20:42

Well done to the car guards and the police.I hope the courts make an example of her.

  • msingo1 - 2011-12-12 20:52

    crazy woman

  • sias1 - 2011-12-12 22:30

The children are better off without a "mother" like that, a few months in jail will do her good.

  • Sheik - 2011-12-12 22:52

Making babies is one thing, being a good mother is another. Surprised most babies make it to adulthood.

  • nokulunganzondo - 2011-12-13 00:44

i'm scared to ask this question, but i will anyway.....WHITE OR BLACK? OR BETTER YET, COLOURED???..

  • alexandra.nett - 2011-12-13 01:07

  • Amanda-Leigh - 2011-12-13 07:27

Lock her in a car parked in the sun for an hour, see how she likes it

  • Caren - 2011-12-13 07:49

Why is the 2 older ones more important than the younger 2 to do shopping. Must be the fact that they are a burden to go shopping with. In that case she SHOULDN'T have had so many kids.

  • Caren - 2011-12-13 07:50

Why is the older one more important. Must be that the 2 younger ones are a burden to shop with. Well, then she shouldn't have had so many kids.

  • johanna.nel - 2011-12-13 09:08

    Send her to China

  • Dakey - 2011-12-13 10:23

Guys, I'm sorry. This woman is not a thief, a rapist or a murderer. She's someone who made a very serious mistake. Do you remember the university Prof. from Cape Town who forgot his 9 month old in the car and went to work? She died, that was also a mistake. Let the justice system sort this out and let's move on to real criminals, yes the type that gets free every day because the prisons are too full.

      Jane - 2011-12-13 13:06

Dakey I get what you are saying about people making mistakes but she didn’t. she hit a cop because they broke the window of her car. If she left the kids in the car by mistake don’t you think she would have thanked the cops first for saving her kids. she was clearly more concerned about her window and doing shopping than the kids. what does that tell you about her? And what mother forgets about where their child is? Don’t have kids if they are not going to be your number one priority. You are supposed to know where your kids are at all times. That is what responsible parents do. No excuses.

      Dakey - 2011-12-13 13:43

@Jane I don't know anything from the incident other than that she was upset and hit a 'cop'. I don't know how she hit the cop, or what she was thinking. If I arrive at a place and I see my child in trouble and ANYONE tries to keep me from them I don't know what I would do. The woman might very simply have panicked. All we know is that the woman left two of her children in the car, we don't know how long or their state. This article seems to downplay the condition of the children a lot since the original article. While I would never even dream of doing that, this was typical of mothers back when I was a kid. We didn't fear kidnapping, so kids staying in the car while mom went to Woolworths was standard. Note I'm not excusing her actions, but we can easily villify every parent for neglect at some point or another. Do we arrest parents who's children drown in pools or parents who's children put their fingers in the electric socket? Let justice run its course, then judge.
