Mom's joy as 'old Pippie' appears

Pretoria - Burn victim Pippie Kruger is doing well since coming home, with her mother saying that much of “the old Pippie” is back.

Anice Kruger described her happiness at seeing her little girl’s improved spirits at their temporary home in Linden, Johannesburg, reported Pretoria News Weekend.

The 3-year-old girl made headlines when her own cloned skin was transplanted on her after she was badly burnt when a firelighter exploded in her father’s hands on New Year’s Eve.

She had five heart attacks, kidney failure, pneumonia and 45 operations and doctors had given her little chance of survival.

“There’s so much of the old Pippie in her now,” said Anice Kruger. “Her feistiness, her waking up with a smile. This morning she woke up with a giggle. Maybe an angel tickled her.”

Her appetite has also returned and she has gained 2kg with doctors said to be impressed by the speed of her recovery.

The little girl was released five months earlier from hospital than expected.

“It’s hard work being all alone because there’s no sisters or doctors to help. There’s no cook that makes food three times a day, so ja,” said Anice.

“I have sore shoulders, but other than that I’m coping really well. It’s nice to bring her out of rehab every day, to know she is coming home with me. That I can sleep silently at night, not worrying about her [in hospital].”

It'll really be cool if we started calling her 'Phoenix'. I'm really happy she's ok.

Wow...what a human can overcome is quite an amazing thing. She is a very special little girl, like every parent that has a child you tend to read a story like this and just thank your lucky stars something like this will never happen to your child. But inspiration likes this makes us realise how very fragile and beautiful life is, so cherish it.

Pippie's story represents such a depth of courage on her part and a will of steel and unconditional love from a devoted and committed Mother to her daughter where no sacrifice is too much as she nurses her back to good health. We love Pippie xx
