More 'Sunday Rapist' details emerge

2011-10-18 14:13

Johannesburg - "Sunday Rapist" Johannes Jacobus Steyn reportedly raped and killed Roodepoort schoolgirl Louise de Waal while his wife was at work and his son was at school.

These details were contained in a signed confession made by Steyn, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Steyn, 35, confessed to being the "Sunday Rapist" before a magistrate in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court on Friday.

He allegedly raped a number of young girls in Gauteng and the North West, mostly on Sundays, since 2008.

Raped at his home

His last victim was said to have been De Waal, who was abducted, raped and murdered last week.

According to the newspaper, Steyn allegedly raped de Waal in his home in the affluent suburb of Wilropark, in Roodepoort.

At the time, his wife was at work and their 6-year-old son was at school.

After committing the crime, he apparently called someone from his church and some friends.

He then got into his gold Mercedes-Benz and fled to Margate, on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, where he eventually handed himself over to the police.

It was reported that he had planned to commit suicide.

Child porn

According to the report, police found child pornography on Steyn's computer. He had also burnt caps and wigs, which he used to disguise himself, as well as dildos [sex toys].

The Sunday rapist's reign of terror apparently began in November 2008.

He allegedly struck again in June and November 2009 in Rustenburg and Potchefstroom.

He was suspected of raping a 16-year-old girl from Vanderbijlpark in February last year and another teenager in Rustenburg in March that year.

On August 15, he allegedly raped an 18-year-old girl, also in Potchefstroom.

Police believed that he was the man who kidnapped 14-year-old Lazanne Farmer and her 16-year-old friend in September.

Farmer died when she jumped from a moving car during the kidnapping.

Later that month, the "Sunday rapist" allegedly kidnapped and raped a 15-year-old girl in Carletonville and on October 31 last year he raped an 11-year-old girl in Krugersdorp.

13 rape charges

Steyn faces 13 charges of rape, 10 of kidnapping, one of murder and six of sexual assault.

The matter has been postponed until December 13 for further investigation. The State has applied for all the charges against him to be centralised.

According to the Beeld, when he appeared in court on Monday, Steyn was wearing the same clothes he wore when he abducted, raped and killed de Waal.

The court has ruled that photographs of Steyn may not be displayed in a manner that could show his identity, as an identity parade might be needed at a later stage.

Steyn's colleagues at Burger Ceiling and Partitioning Distributors were receiving counselling organised by their employer, the newspaper reported.

    Give him the needle.

      Dennis - 2011-10-18 14:25

give him the chop, arms legs and balls

      Servaas - 2011-10-18 14:26

After they cut his B@lls off first..

      Walter - 2011-10-18 14:39

Yes balls off first and then a long, slow, agonising death! Won't happen here though and he'll probably be sent to an institution. Damn!

      Ann - 2011-10-18 14:52

All I can say is this man is EVIL personified!

      Wesley - 2011-10-18 15:27

THIS!!! is what the death penalty was designed for!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know we dont have the right to take lives! but! In order to save others its necessary!!!!! BASTARD!!!!

      Darryn - 2011-10-18 15:41

If the damn law had put him and kept him in jail for his first offence this would never have happened. How could his wife not have known after the first incident?

      Craig - 2011-10-19 09:53

needle - rope - dont mind

  • Dustin - 2011-10-18 14:25

      Ian - 2011-10-18 17:54

Hopefully they send him to Pollsmoor, where the Numbers gangs can do the number on him every day for a VERRRRRY long time.

      Dustin - 2011-10-19 10:06

I hear Johnny Mongrel is in the market for a new "wyfie"

  • tracey.badenhorst - 2011-10-18 14:25

I have no sympathy for the wife how could she not have suspected a thing come on all woman have that extra sixth sense when somethings not right. The wife should change that poor little boys surname immediately and move to a new place otherwise that child will be branded with the filth his father created. The child deserves a chance at life without the shame hanging over his head.

      Thelma - 2011-10-18 14:35

Tracey I am sure she has applied to the courts to have her and her sons surname changed and filed for divorce. Don't be so quick to judge the innocent victims involved. You might as well say Louise mom is to blame for her daughters death because she allowed her daughter to walk to school. Let's be realistic, SA is a haven for criminals.

      Reshan - 2011-10-18 14:41

I don't know about that one (unless I missed an article somewhere) she very well may have known what her husband was but to execute her without judgement is something humanity cannot do. We don't know what her situation was. Guys in previous posts mentioned that rape was about power and violence for all we know she lived in fear for hers and her child's life. She was living with a monster after all…

      Moi - 2011-10-18 14:54

"I have no sympathy for the wife how could she not have suspected a thing come on all woman have that extra sixth sense when somethings not right." Really??? I don't think I got that memo. Be reasonable. She wasn't with her husband 24/7. No one is with their partner every hour of every day. As much as you may trust and love your partner, do you really know what they are doing every minute of every day? I feel sorry for that poor woman. Her whole life is crumbling around her.

      janine.cronje - 2011-10-18 14:55

I just can't understand how she could not have known, he was convicted in 2007 of sexual assault, their son is 6.... I guess love is blind.

      ferialm - 2011-10-18 15:30

Please people go and read Piet Byleveldts biography. Psychopaths or sociopaths are very good and hiding who they really are. I don't think she thought he was raping children when he obviously made a child with her. How many men get up and go and dont say where or do strange things. Tracey her life is ruined not yours so please step to the kirb unless you wana walk in her shoes.

      sandimzilikazi - 2011-10-18 15:36

all I can say is... remember the sick couple way back in the early 90's Gert van Rooyen & Joey Haarhoff I sincerly hope we're not dealing with the same case here!! clearly no one should/can be trusted. If needs be the woman/wife must also be investigated!

      sandimzilikazi - 2011-10-18 15:50

Ferialm, my point is let's not defend this woman, if she didn't do it, GREAT! no one is accusing her but can we just not leave any stones unturned. as we all know we live in a sick and twisted society so anything goes!! I'm not saying this wman is involved but there is a posibility!! but the point is she must also be investigated.

      Jose - 2011-10-18 15:51

I agree with what you say except that maybe his wife didnt know.. he led a double life, a sicko like that can act as nothing happened so his wife would never suspect a thing... like everyone who knew him didnt want to believe it was him because he portrayed himself as a good person .. both families are suffering and indeed pray for them

      Towtruck - 2011-10-18 16:02

Nope Thelma this man HAD previous convictions, she SHOULD have know about that!

      Thelma - 2011-10-18 16:19

@ Towtruck - Nobody knows the details of the 2007 conviction. I personally would love to read the report, who knows what happened. But we cannot start judging people just because they a women with sixth sense. If that the case then women of all walks of life have failed their family in some way because their sixth sense did not kick in. Come on please how can you people just assume without any hard evidence. And I agree with Ferialm read Piet Beyleveld book and you will know all you have to about psychopaths or watch 3rd degree to listen to what he has to say.

      sandimzilikazi - 2011-10-18 16:25

Thelma and what is up with you saying "I am sure" "innocent victims involved wara-wara" seriously, like you say South Africa is a haven for criminals and yet you're so quick to jump into this woman's defense. we do not know her ok!!! and remember everyone in this couple's world thought they knew this sicko man to be all sorts of good things... do not be quick too stand up for what you do not know!!!

      Thelma - 2011-10-18 16:45

@ Sandi - "I am sure" because if it were me I would change my identity to protect my children. "Innocent victims" if the women did not know what he was up to why should she be judged because of his actions? Wow like you say "we don't know her" so how can you judge her if you don't know her? Practice what you preach. All I am saying is this women has enough to deal with she does not need society labelling her for things she did not do or did not know about. If she in anyway had anything to do with it or helped her husband to lure the young girls then she is as guilty as hell but until that is proven we have no right to judge her.

      sandimzilikazi - 2011-10-18 17:11

Thelma, I did not judge this woman just like I did not defend her hense I said we do not know her (ref: my above comments)!!!! "if it were you" really Thelma?!1 let's begin with asking you this: If it were you would you have stayed in that relationship/marriege after finding out your hubby is a child molester??? You're not this woman so let's not be hypertheartical please!!!

      Thelma - 2011-10-18 17:22

@ Sandi - If it were me and I had no knowledge of what was happening the last thing I would do is ask society for any support. Clearly you are labelled according to how society think and not by actuall evidence. At the end of the day so many people have been hurt and families destroyed by what has happened and all that we can hope for is that justice prevails. Lastly lets no judge what we don't know about rather get all the facts and then judge.

      Thelma - 2011-10-18 17:38

@ Sandi - Part of the police investigation the police would of interrogated her and surely if she had anything to do with it or had any knowledge of what he was doing she herself would have been arrested as an accomplice. Just a thought!

      Peter - 2011-10-19 08:46

He is a convicted criminal for sexual offences. His excuse for his Sunday walkabouts, was that he was doing his community service. I am of the opinion that his wife should have been a bit suspicious regarding what community service he was doing, where he was doing it, and what exactly he was doing.

      Zee - 2011-10-19 09:06

if she lived in fear why did she not do something about it, not continue to live with him for so long.

      chantellvg - 2011-12-13 13:27

just to get this of my chest... if u married 2 a man who is abusive and u live in fear (espescialy when there's a child or children involve) then it's not that easy to get out!!! Just wondering: what if it was u in this situation... what if your man is always having a boy's night out (say for instance every thursday night) and u believe him cause you trust him and love him. and then his actually going out searching for victims!!! Will it be fair towards u if people just assumed u had to know? Maybe she was just too relieved everytime he left cause then he couldn't hurt her for a few hours! there's lots of things to think about before judging someone.

  • janine.cronje - 2011-10-18 14:30

Pity they can't show his face, more victims may come forward if they recognise him. Hope it doesn't take too long before they allow it

  • Tommy - 2011-10-18 15:00

please hand him over to me, even if just for an hour.....please. but only after they've done an identity parade, because when im done with him, his wife wouldn't even recognise him!

      Bryan - 2011-10-18 15:10

Love to help out on that one Tommy... I'd derive huge pleasure in watching this bastard suffer..!!

  • Shellerjc - 2011-10-18 15:00

This story & the man makes me sick to my stomach. I still would love to know what drives a person, being it male or female to rape. Why?

  • Shaun - 2011-10-18 15:01

This 'thing' will be safer in prison. Believe that.

  • Clarissa - 2011-10-18 15:07

  • Shaun - 2011-10-18 15:08

      lee.ferreira - 2011-10-18 15:18

This thing should be killed, if he went to prison we would pay for his board and lodging!!

  • ronelle.boshoff - 2011-10-18 15:09

Disgusting! You deserve a long painfull death! You do not deserve the right to live! You are not Human!

  • Kala - 2011-10-18 15:11

Get him in a police line up first. it won't be the first time a criminal has confessed to crimes that he didn't commit just so they can be in the spot light. It could be that the Sunday rapist is still out there. Just saying - Let's be sure we have the right man.

  • Cecile - 2011-10-18 15:31

Seeing as he was given community service for his 'deeds' in 2007, might he get a nice low bail sum at this stage, or has our judicial system finally woken up to the fact that sexual offenders actually happen to be serious criminals, and that bail is NOT APPROPRIATE????

      Sandra - 2011-10-19 10:49

We should all stand together and demand immediate change. Our judicial system must be held responsible for their part in this crime. These offenders should not have the priviledge of bail and should all be sentenced to life without parole

  • Sarie - 2011-10-18 15:37

WHY WAS HE STOPPED FROM COMMITTING SUICIDE? Now, we, the taxpayers, have to fund the rest of his miserable life!

      Deon - 2011-10-18 15:54

They wanted to close the dockets of many cases, to get closure for the victims and theire families

      Reshan - 2011-10-18 16:07

We best be careful not to become the monsters we hunt...

      dianne.farrell - 2011-10-18 16:16

Because Sarie, if he committed suicide, besides being the easy way out for him, his evil deeds would have gone to the grave with him, just like the Gert Van Rooyen/Joey Haarhoff case where the families of 6 girls to this day, about 25 years later still do not know what happened to their children, because he managed to commit suicide Another case where a convicted paedophile was let off to carry on raping and murdering young girls

  • debbie.vosloo - 2011-10-18 16:04

I believe our system is at fault here, how many times do we hear of men that have previous sexual offences and then they end up killing their victims like that guy that killed that blond boy in Plett, or that teacher from George who abused his school kids, got sentenced to house arrest and in that time still managed to have sex with another boy? The system should keep closer eye on first time offenders because they will all end up like this creep did! Then its tooo late to say he had done it in the past because nobody can bring this girl back! RIP Louise de Waal.

      Reshan - 2011-10-18 16:19

The Sex Offenders Registry needs to be enforced and enhanced. Anyone entered into the database should be required by law to identify themselves and it should also be made public.

      Thelma - 2011-10-18 17:53

How did he hide his criminal record from his work place? Surely they do a credit/criminal record check when you apply for a position.

  • wayne.wasserfall - 2011-10-18 16:23

they must put him in a glass box and leave him in the sun slowley and painfully die

  • El-Ria - 2011-10-18 16:40

He is wearing the same clothes? Shouldn't it be kept as evidence or used to do forensic tests or something?

      Thelma - 2011-10-18 16:56

I was wondering the same thing.

  • Lawrence - 2011-10-18 17:00

This guy won't last long in prison. He'll either hang himself or someone will pop him.

  • Christo - 2011-10-18 17:00

Friends from Church??? Sunday Rapist?? Dellusional (Atheist) is going to have a field day in the comments column! I dont know what would Jesus do but Lord, please forgive me what Im thinking! Hannibal Lectre?,Dexter?,where are you when we need you?

  • Alva - 2011-10-18 17:05

Absolute monster! No punishment can be severe enough! To think his 6 year old son has to live with the stigma.

  • Val - 2011-10-18 17:15

How did this monster get away with it for so long??

  • gillian.sanderson - 2011-10-18 17:20

This is one very sick creature . . . how his wife didn't pick up any of his rotten energy beats me!!

  • Cecile - 2011-10-18 17:30

I'd also like to know what the TRUE statistics are, of sexual offenders (paedophiles included) TRULY getting rehabilitated. I'd like to hazard a guess that the true stats will reflect that NONE of them are ever rehabilitated. If psychologists think that trying to change the behavioural patterns of these people, will really rehabilitate them, I'd like to read about the success stories somewhere. And if I'm right about my hunch, these people should ALL be put in jail for life. NO REHABILITATION, NO RELEASE. End of story.

      Lara - 2011-10-18 19:51

Cecile, it's true. Psychologists acknowledge that pedophilia cannot be cured. They do chemical castrations in America, but they should be locked away on islands far away from other people. Their addiction is incurable.

  • Tanya - 2011-10-18 17:34

can somebody please cut of his d**k with a blunt knife... he doesn't deserve to be alive!!! i mean really, what goes through a sick mind when he rapes an 11yr old! ffs

  • jodi.fullard - 2011-10-18 18:29

put him in pollsmore prison where he can endure thrusts up his f****** ass every single day of his life.

  • Asha - 2011-10-18 20:22

This is why they have to bring back the death penalty. These predators are repeat offenders. They r not ever going to stop.........and in their wake they leave hundreds of Shattered lives, that will never, ever be the same. My thoughts & prayers with all the families of these little girls, who will relive the horror in the months to come.

  • Ciels - 2011-10-18 21:09

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2011-10-18 21:59

Let us see his face, the face of evil, a killer, that does not deserve to live, Why protect him, the more he is protected by the law, the less other victims will not be able to charge him.

  • Steve - 2011-10-19 06:53

  • Claire - 2011-10-19 07:14
