Johannesburg - Police on Monday confirmed that a total of five people had been arrested in connection to the murder of two police officers who were shot dead on the N3 near Modderfontein last week.

The suspects were arrested around Gauteng and Durban, said Colonel Noxolo Kweza.

"They will appear in the Durban, Johannesburg and Alexandra Magistrate's Court [on Tuesday]," Kweza said.

"One of the suspects has since been linked to the killing of.... Constable [Frans] Ledwaba who died two weeks ago," she added.

Ledwaba was shot dead during an armed robbery at Park Station in the Johannesburg CBD.

He died on the scene and his service pistol was stolen. Meanwhile, Constable Maisha Mafokoane, Mthokoziseni Myeza and Steven Mafanelo were attacked by a gang of heavily armed men on the N3 last Sunday.

They had reportedly spotted what they thought was a "suspicious-looking" vehicle along the N3 and attempted to stop the vehicle, but found themselves in a hail of bullets from the vehicle's occupants.

Mafokoane and Myeza died from their injuries while Mafanelo sustained serious injuries.

He was recovering in hospital.

During the memorial service of the slain officers on Wednesday, Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mafanelo said Mafanelo had shot and injured one of their attackers.

The man, a Zimbabwean national, was at the time said it to be in hospital under police guard.

The man had since died, Kweza said.
