More delays hit Velvet Sky flights

2012-02-24 11:20

Johannesburg - Velvet Sky flights will be delayed by up to five hours on Friday - two hours longer than was originally expected, the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) said.

This applied to the 05:45 flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town, the 06:10 flight from Durban to Johannesburg and the 06:20 flight from Johannesburg to Durban.

"The mid-morning flights will also be delayed by up to two hours," Acsa spokesperson Solomon Makgale said.

Earlier, Velvet Sky said in a statement that a business dispute had caused the cancellation of all Velvet Sky flights on Thursday.

The airline said it was in a dispute with a service provider and was in the process of changing service providers, but that the process had not been concluded in time.

The broad-based black economic empowerment company is based in Durban and flies between that city, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Velvet Sky said the delays, which started on Wednesday, were caused by circumstances beyond its control.

- Velvet Sky urged passengers to contact the call centre at 0861 835 838 for any queries.

Shame, even "Rasbangee Air, aka Velvet Sky are having disputes. Welcome to the big leagues boys!!!!

Dear DiamondDirk.... Velvet Sky's major shareholder is Excalibur Aerospace, which in turn in owned by Excalibur private equity. Excalibur Aerospace has a which has a substantial stake in 1- Time Airlines. So your comment " Rasabangee Airlines" ...well makes no sense at all!

    BBBEE is the problem here

      Akal - 2012-02-24 12:37

      How exactly?

      Akal - 2012-02-24 12:38

2 non-whites own majority shares, and the other 2 are white. So if there were all white this would not have happened?

One, two, three - belly up... the signs are everywhere... Flitestar, Sun Air, Interlink - and now Velvet... SANTACO never even took off.... as long as Shebeen African Airways is government owned and can do whatever they want it is difficult for any other airline to operate.... look at the battle of BA/Comair and 1Time....

      geoffreywaugh - 2012-02-24 12:22

And what the hell SAA thinks it's doing meddling in perfectly functioning low cost airline industry with its Mango i just don't know, why is it acceptable for the tax payer to bankroll(and quite often bail out) a government owned entity intervening and compete with private companies.

      mholthuysen - 2012-02-24 12:34

Agreed Geoffrey - it is time that they privatize SAA - create an open sky policy - result = change in attitude, prices, competitiveness - and those who don't succeed will go belly up - including SAA....

Mike add NationWide to your list

      mholthuysen - 2012-02-24 13:42

Sorry Tony - indeed - destroyed by Shebeen African Airways - a perfect and stunning airline - serviced by KLM and grounded - by the SAA / CAA Mafia!

Where did Velvet Sky's planes come from?

      Bibi - 2012-02-24 12:27

      And who services them?

  • Juan - 2012-02-24 11:47

Sounds like a good airline to avoid.

  • Shaun - 2012-02-24 11:47

I predict Velvet Sky's plane dont take to the skies again after this debacle

  • Bibi - 2012-02-24 12:05

Never heard of them or seen their planes. Wonder if their planes are serviced properly.

  • Mark - 2012-02-24 12:07

Velvet Sky are lying to passengers. I was stranded at OR Tambo a few weeks ago by more than 4 hours by Velvet Sky and each time the 180 odd passengers were lied to and told the flight would leave in 1/2 and hour and then the aircraft was being flown up from Cape Town and then it was being refueled. All of these were lies and Velvet Sky was trying not to lose the passengers. There was one very ugly altercation between a passenger and airport official which almost ended in a fist fight. How stupid does Velvet Sky think passengers are?

  • brynvw - 2012-02-24 13:00

Velvet sky has been a screw up since they took to the air! Take a look at Hello Peter. Its been a disaster since day 1. Their staff are rude, I don't think they have ever landed on time. Their call centre staff umm and aaah (literally) - their managers are never available to take your call when you have a complaint. This isn't really "ground" breaking news! I feel so sorry for the people who have booked and who are stranded. I don't think they are going to see a cent of their money

  • Belucha - 2012-02-24 13:10

My 80 year old parents are due to fly from OR Tambo to Durban. According to them flights are still on schedule for tomorrow. Doubtful..What do I do? Bee Durban

      brynvw - 2012-02-24 13:12

Sending you my positive thoughts for your parents tomorrow!

  • tony.kirby1 - 2012-02-24 13:22

And guess what. You can still book on line.

      Ally - 2012-02-24 13:28

Spread the word!! Don't book with this bunch until they've sorted things out.

  • Fanie - 2012-02-24 13:39

You are bankrupt man admit. You must all jump out the window. Wonder where all the money went tho.

  • Tman - 2012-02-24 14:06

Just go let it out on

  • Mabusane - 2012-04-15 16:13
