More doctors sued for malpractice

Johannesburg - The number of legal claims against doctors has reached record levels, the Sunday Times reported.

In total, 2903 legal claims were lodged against doctors in 2010/11 - 200 more than the previous year, according to the Health Professions Council of SA.

Misconduct cases included 45 cases of substance or drug abuse, 48 cases of alcohol dependency, 28 cases of bipolar disorder and 12 cases of schizophrenia.

The SA Medical Association (Sama), which represents 17 500 doctors, has blamed the increase in claims on a medical malpractice campaign launched by the council.

More than 1000 claims were being processed by the Medical Protection Society, which provides professional insurance to doctors, the weekly reported.

This is what happens when the quality of education drops and the pass rates are lowered to enable the majority to pass.

I don't understand why bipolar and schizophrenia should be regarded as "misconduct". Those two are mental diseases. Someone enlighten me.

if you are diagnosed with a mental illness that can affect your ability to practise medicine then as a doctor it is your responsibility to inform the medical board so that they can evaluate if you are still fit to practise medicine. If you don't report to them then only its viewed as misconduct.

Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are mental illnesses - not misconduct?

  • ThaboRangaka - 2013-06-16 16:11

The Health Professions Council of SA can be reached at their website to explain how misconduct cases included 45 cases of substance or drug abuse, 48 cases of alcohol dependency, 28 cases of bipolar disorder and 12 cases of schizophrenia. All these conditions are indeed Mental Health Issues. the question is, was it the practitioner suffering from these, or were clients with these conditions suing the Practitioners.
