More fights against prisons' EE plan

2012-12-07 09:41

Cape Town - Five more Western Cape correctional services officials are challenging the department's employment equity plan, it was reported on Friday.

The Cape Times reported that the department was served with papers on Thursday, with the pre-trial to be heard in the Cape Town Labour Court later on Friday.

The applicants, all coloured, are challenging the equity targets which are based on national demographics rather than provincial targets.

The correctional services target in the Western Cape is the same as every other province: 79.3% target for black staff, 9.3%  for whites, 8.8% for coloureds and 2.5% for Indians.

The local demographic, however, is 54% coloured, 26% black, 19% white and 1% Indian.

According to the report, the applicants are Desiree Merkeur, Teresa Abrahams, Deidre Jordaan, Jan Kotze and Derick Wehr.

The court papers reportedly state: "Their appointment was declined solely on the grounds of their race or gender or both and because it would have resulted in a deviation from the department's employment equity plan."

The respondents are the department, its national commissioner Tom Moyane, Correctional Services Minister S'bu Ndebele and the office of Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant.

The court application follows a separate landmark case by five employees that seeks to have the equity plan struck down. Both bids are being backed by trade union Solidarity.

Lawyers are expected to file papers in the same court later on Friday for the second matter.

Good luck trying to get a Xhosa to listen to a Zulu, or vice versa.

  • ThaboMdodo - 2012-12-07 10:00

Its terrible, 95 percent of the inmates are black, therefore even if 100% of the employees are white or coloured it still makes only 5% of the prison white? #Eish

HA ha ha ha good one!

And this is one of many reasons whey the ANC won't win back the Western Cape in the next elections. And why it will probably lose several more urban areas to the DA. The ANC isn't exactly hanging on by its fingernails, but it's become so blatantly anti-white and anti anything that's not black, that it's losing support rapidly across the board from anyone with half a brain.....

Ja ne forget competence and just choose the black guy. Coloureds was never previously disadvantaged!

  • Donkervlie - 2012-12-07 10:20

I think it is becoming clear that black people will not share anything with other groups and it is time to find a seperate place for minority groups in the western Cape.

Go read the US Declaration of Independence. The reasons given in that document bears a shocking resemblance to what we are experiencing in the Western Cape. Time to secede?

  • trevor.myburgh.12 - 2012-12-07 10:25

Well done, at last coloreds are standing up to fight, you are setting an example of what we had before. Draat sitters. I solute you

      terra.schoultz - 2012-12-07 11:41

Trevor, i agree it is so important for the colored people of our country to stand up against this useless discrimination against them. The have never been recognized by this incompetent ANC government. Ridiculous.

I wont count ehrenreich and joemat as coloured as they are more the brain washed morons from the anc child. VERY BAD Blood mixed into those two.

  • polya314 - 2012-12-07 11:10

It's fine! Only with the non-black races united against the ANC can we keep them out of the Western Cape. It doesn't matter how many bus loads they bring in from the Eastern Cape: we must cling to our right to a better and non-racial SA.

  • polya314 - 2012-12-07 11:15

Why is it so difficult to just choose the employees who are best qualified?!

  • neiljvv - 2012-12-07 11:58

  • eyesears.handsfeet - 2012-12-07 12:15

Nice, Nice! At last! This should have been done a long time ago. I am glad someone has woken up. The applicants, all coloured - I wish you all of the best.
