More fuss over rhino than miners: Cosatu

2012-07-02 16:00

Johannesburg - More of a fuss is made over the deaths of rhino or white workers than those of black workers, a Cosatu official claimed on Monday.

"We know if it was the rhino killed there was going to be lot of noise made by some, or if it was the white workers," Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) Gauteng spokesperson Dumisani Dakile said.

He was commenting about the deaths of five miners at Gold Fields' KDC West mine at the weekend. The company said a fire broke out in the Ya-Rona shaft in Merafong, near Carletonville, west of Johannesburg.

Fourteen miners were taken to hospital. By Sunday, three had been discharged.

The National Union of Mineworkers, a Cosatu affiliate, said the five died of asphyxiation and claimed that they had been working overtime loading mud, without available compressed air.

Comment could not be immediately obtained from the company on these claims.

Dakile said the government should take "drastic steps" against mines exposing workers to dangerous conditions.

Cosatu was planning an urgent meeting with the departments of labour, and mineral resources and energy, to discuss how to prevent such events in future. They also planned a national day of mourning.

Gold Fields' chief executive officer Nick Holland earlier described the deaths as shocking.

"We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to their families, friends and colleagues. We are in the process of contacting their next-of-kin and will do all in our power to assist them through this difficult time. We will thoroughly investigate the causes of this accident."

Executive vice president and head of Gold Fields' South Africa region Peter Turner said there had been 655 fatality-free working days (two years and nine months) at the shaft before Saturday's accident.

"This incident is highly regrettable in view of the significant safety improvements we've experienced on this mine."

The shaft, and the other 12 shafts on the KDC operation, had been closed and the company would co-operate in an investigation.

Comment was not immediately available from the mineral resources department.

O keep your mouths shut COSATU. Rhinos can't speak for themselves, and if we don't say anyhting then nothing will be done about it. Do you always have to bring race into everything, that's the only thing you guys can say. Always the "poor" old blacks. I'm so sick and tired of this crap!!

      smili.fication - 2012-07-02 16:22

Race card!!!! That is disgusting Cocksatu thugs... How can they even come up with crap like this? WTF is wrong with them. They see the world as black and white. Is COCKSATU comparing black workers to animals now? Thats racism COCKSATU scum...

      eugene.meyer1980 - 2012-07-02 16:23

Well, have you ever heard of a rhino working in the mines??? NOOOOO!!!! Of course not. So bet your @$$ its worth mentioning.

      spartanx93 - 2012-07-02 16:35

well blacks are not at threat of extinction!

      boltonbarry - 2012-07-02 16:37

      wbschorn - 2012-07-02 16:50

Poor white workers almost extinct!! hahahaha - 2012-07-02 17:34

Why do Cosatu have to racialise everything? Is it because these are white Rhinos that are being poached?

      Sharon - 2012-07-02 18:44

we have millions of miners we dont have that many rhinos left

      fussed.anderson - 2012-07-03 07:52

I see, Rhinos havent payed there union fees again

  • garth.baldwin.96 - 2012-07-02 16:11

Last I checked miners weren't nearing extinction.. That will only happen after the nationalization of the mines!

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-02 16:34

Next thing they will say is that the White Rhino is getting more attention that the Black Rhino...

      clifford.sithole.5 - 2012-07-02 16:39

cosatu...Please spare a thought for my dog Felix who died yesterday. I'll miss you my friend..

      David - 2012-07-02 16:47

What a f*king idiot. Miners have a choice to go into a dangerous working enviroment and measures are put in place for safety. Rhinos's do not have a choice.

      fussed.anderson - 2012-07-02 17:20

Mines and unused mines dont HUNT miners

  • lyzelle.scheepers - 2012-07-02 16:11

      smili.fication - 2012-07-02 16:26

thabong.. we dont have crazy ANC leaders calling for war against the black people now do we? You should just stfu.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-07-02 16:32

@Thabang, you been sleeping for the last 10 years... We understand.

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-02 16:36

thabang... it's going to be shortly thabang against the ear....

  • Jana - 2012-07-02 16:11

More fuss about rhinos, alas, that is probably true. But about white workers? Bull, I say. Substantiate your statement!!

      E=MC2 - 2012-07-02 16:20

casatu are suffering a bad case of "poor blacks syndrome"

      ahenriquesfernandes - 2012-07-02 16:22

My thoughts exactly. Whenever I read about these terrible mining accidents its always just said to be mine workers that have gotten hurt. If race is ever mentioned I must completely skip over it! Shows you who has there mind always on the non existance race issue

  • anton.burger.16 - 2012-07-02 16:12

So????...miners are not on the endangered list like white ou’s and white rhinos.....hehehehehe!!!

  • Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-02 16:12

Yawn ... some people should rather just keep quiet, when they talk it just proves how dim they are.

  • Pulverturm - 2012-07-02 16:13

Yes, Rhino's are made a fuss of, because they may be extinct... as in no more Rhino's if something isn't done to stop their demise. As for the comment about White Workers, please cite an example. I think this is just cheap politicking with a side order of race card if you ask me! Boring. Bring our attention the plight of mine workers, not black or white or pink or blue mine workers... but just plain mine workers, leave race out of it, then I will have more sympathy.

      Sharon - 2012-07-02 18:48

unfortunately the chinese and vietkong dont use miners for moetie

  • thabang.bonang.7 - 2012-07-02 16:13

Mining companies continually ignore the safety of their employees. No wonder they are continually sued globally for non compliance to safety, health and environment. Many have prioritised profits over people. Let them be nationalised.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-07-02 16:23

Oh please as if nationalisation will better the safety records. Oh, the ignorance knows no boundaries!!

      Chumscrubber1 - 2012-07-02 16:26

Do you honestly believe a state run mine will have better safety standards? Look at the low standards in everything the state controls now, why expect different? I'm keen for the state to nationalise a mine, then we can do a comparison, will be very interesting.

      thabang.bonang.7 - 2012-07-02 16:31

      Never underestimate South Africans.

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-02 16:40

thabang as for health and safety. All staff under goes security, health and safety training on site. How-ever it is the employees that have to up held the health and safety. The employer can only make it safe(as required by law) but if you have a bunch of Apes causing problems then it is their own fault...

      thabang.bonang.7 - 2012-07-02 16:44

@chaplinncharlie, who are you referring to as apes?

      bomb.technician.5 - 2012-07-02 16:53

What happened to the Aurora mine.....?????

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-02 16:54

if the shoe fits...Thabang... if the shoe fits...

      thabang.bonang.7 - 2012-07-02 16:58

@bomb.technician.5, Aurora is another example of a privately owned mine just like Gold Fields.

      martin.britchford.5 - 2012-07-02 17:10

thabang, since you be typing its clear you are not a miner, do you have any idea how anal safety is now days, drop a spanner and nearly hit someone and work is stopped for an investigation by aholes ltd.

      shaylene.stenger - 2012-07-02 17:21

Hmm let's have a look at all things that are run by goverment , the hospitals are in a shamble, our education minister cannot even deliver textbooks in time and no new schools have been built, 2 of our highest ranked officers in our defense force eg Selebi have been found guilty of crimes a 3rd one soon to be added to our list. Then we have service delivery where it takes almost 2 weeks to fix a pot hole or to fix traffic light etc, we then have our shocking municipalities where people are being incorrectly charged for water and lights..... I really can carry on if you want... And yet Thabang you still want the goverment to nationalize mines when they can't even run departments or basic neccesities in this country. Seriously get a brain!!!!!!

      jeffrey.jones.357 - 2012-07-02 17:21

You want to see real extensive deaths in mines, then try China my china. They die in their thousands in those mines every year. Maybe it's because the Chinese mines are nationalised, and the European mines are not, that deaths in European mines are few and far between. Furthermore, what has the miners' union done to see that safety in mines is adhered to, that should be one of their priorities as a union - to look after the safety of their members.

      audrey.lang.10 - 2012-07-02 17:25

@ Thabang. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the chairperson of Gold Fields a black person? Mamphela Ramphele. She was one of the founders of the Black Consciousness Movement(I have a smart remark about this, but I will keep it to myself in the interest of keeping the peace, hehe), and she had two lovechilds(lovechildren?) with Steve Biko.Only mentioning this to show that she should care a lot about human rights.'s not like the white people killed the black workers......I guess the whole point is just to blame white people for absolutely everything, right?

      Harold - 2012-07-02 17:31

Thabang Your profile picture tells it all .Go pleasure your self. You Know nothing abaout mining. no dooubt your government will forget all about the money once they nationalise. Zambias mines were some of the most dangerous mines in the world while they were nationalised. We lost on average 7 people a month in the Kitwe area in those days. Stupid

  • Tommy - 2012-07-02 16:13

    Supply and Demand.

  • renay88 - 2012-07-02 16:15

And that statement will be one of the many reasons rhinos will not be around 20 years from now.

  • Nomde - 2012-07-02 16:15

    yay - race card

  • Manie - 2012-07-02 16:16

What a sad, divisive and judgmental statement to make! Any loss of life is a tragic event, for we cannot restore life. Having worked in many African countries in the Humanitarian role, I can testify to battles to save lives, but also callous disregard for human life and dignity that is so rampant on this continent. Mr Dakile has obviously never had sympathy with the many murders on farms, settlements, etc. either. Action is called for an urgent meeting of departments, after 655 days fatality free days on this one mine! Granted, there has been other accidents, but I would so love to see even 365 days farm murder free. What about that, then? Or does the murder of innocents not qualify in certain political circles as wanting of action?

  • eugene.meyer1980 - 2012-07-02 16:16

Yes, more fuss is made over rhinos, and white workers than over those black miners. But how much fuss is made over farm murders???

  • E=MC2 - 2012-07-02 16:17

what a load of racist cr@p!!

  • wbroli - 2012-07-02 16:17

the white or the black rhino?

  • gerhardus.windpomp - 2012-07-02 16:18

Rhino's will be extinct soon. Millions of jobless miners stand in the que to replace 5 casualties.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-07-02 16:33

No thabang, it doesn't hurt, but your ignorance does make us laugh.

      gerhardus.windpomp - 2012-07-02 16:39

Lol,good one Thabang. Only problem is our bros know how to dig a hole, but eish, planting a mielie is a different story.

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-02 16:42

yes as there is so many farmers why don't they go buy a piece of land and start farming. It called a bank. They give loans you should try it. Instead of I WANT... You want a PK or what???

      richard.hipkin - 2012-07-02 16:46

No thabang, there is nothing wrong with what Gerhadus said, there ARE millions of unemployed people who can replace those who sadly lost their lives. That is not malicious in any way, it is a sad reality. However, rhino will be extinct in 10 years... NOTHING will replace them... Your statements are malicious. You are commenting out of context with the article just to stir and look for trouble. So, when you next march against someone's painting remember our little discussion here.

      gerhardus.windpomp - 2012-07-02 17:14

when you kill a farmer you kill your food supply. not even a rhino is stooped enough to wipe out it's food supply.

  • joemols - 2012-07-02 16:18

There s a reason why your stupid government has departments, wake up,we dont need this racism and unnecessary comments...

  • sisie.indola - 2012-07-02 16:19

No what you seem to forget is that we the public (the taxpayer) are so sick and tired of the strikers, and destruction and vandalism. The excuses, the broken promises - that we would rather fight for the Rhino (he who has no voice) man is replaced every single day - there is a baby factory round the corner. When all the Rhino are finished & klaar - you will be shouting "eish what happened, there is no jobs" so do us all a favour and shut the f*** up. Or lets do something drastic - shut the mines then one you will have no supporters and they will have no jobs.

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-07-02 16:22

Rhino is almost extinct, miners are bountiful... COSATU pointing fingers at "white people" - endless.

Because they are endangered animals you bunch of clowns......and we could really do with less black illegal miners stealing from our resources........and there are more than enough of these idiots in our country.....Got to be the most pathetic comment from Cosatu this month, but wait, its only the second day of July, they gonna top this one......

  • colin.langley - 2012-07-02 16:30

The deafening silence from Cosatu and it's partners over the Aruara debacle answered my question long ago....they don't give a rats ass about you my china... whether you are black or white...just pay your membership and go a sheep

  • Dean Hart - 2012-07-02 16:31

Race card seems to work for COSATU, Every time there's a issue this federation pull put the race card, and to compare an endangered species with humans is the rough part.... You uneducated scoundrel, do you not think before you issue statements. If you need tips as JZ

  • peter.jefferies.90 - 2012-07-02 16:32

Wow, somehow they managed to make it about race!!

  • Nicorien Le Roux - 2012-07-02 16:33

The mines belongs to companies sir. Talk to them about the safety of the miners. Rhinos belongs to the people of our beautiful country. They belong to our children and grand children. Don't get confused. They are OUR heritage. We need to protect them.

  • Heinrich - 2012-07-02 16:34

Wait , so this happened this past weekend? Rhino kills have been happening for years. Heck it's only Monday! Unwind the panties Cosatu! Or am I unaware of stats showing mining deaths far outnumbering farm and rhino kills?

  • Bok - 2012-07-02 16:38

Maybe it's because whites and rhinos are actually worth more to SA!

      johan.maree.5036 - 2012-07-02 16:49

That's uncalled for, go sit in the corner, please don't associate yourself with my rugby team!

  • trevor.bush.9655 - 2012-07-02 16:39

COASTU, the most racist organisation in SA..and by the way, get educated Dumisani Dakile , there are around 35 MILLION black people in SA, how many Rhino's do you think are left in SA, hell the WORLD...when blacks are on the verge of extinction then lets talk again, till then, sit down, shut up and pay attention to the REAL issues in SA and stop being a racist.

      brian.m.sithole - 2012-07-02 16:49

Dumb statement... even dumber comment courtesy of resident news24 intellectual, Trevor Bush. So by your dazzling wisdom, since there is such a great number of black people, the death of a black person is nothing of any real significance... Such stupid statements validate the likes of Juju and co...

      phele.pelezinoh - 2012-07-02 17:00

I totally disagree with ur comment, its malice becauze since blacks are many,it means they deserve 2 die lyk they are dying nw,here we talk abt human life, people who have families @Trevor bush

      Disgusting comment Trevor.

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-07-02 16:42

What's next? Who else can COSATU blame and point fingers at? Obviously white people are being blamed to death, but now we bringing in endangered species??

  • Phelamanga - 2012-07-02 16:44

The poaching of rhino is an entirely different issue form that of miners dying. There is no comparison. And then creating conflict by even mentioning whites is offensive in this situation. Perhaps COSATU should also shout out about the murder of defenceless white farmers, their wives and children as well. Or is it all right to complain about the deaths of blacks and not that of whites. The death of any South African in accidents, whether in mines or on the roads, is tragic, and shocking.Only when we begin to regard all people who live in South Africa as South Africans as per the Freedom Charter will we get away from the vile racist populism that spews out of the mouths of COSATU cadres. Every rhino that is killed is a loss to our combined national heritage, and a people in Asia will be making more money out of that rhinos horn than the poachers themselves get. What an absolute disgrace to humanity!

  • Joubs1957 - 2012-07-02 16:45

What about the scores of people who die in TAXI accidents! Close down the taxi industry? Typical Banana republic selective standards

  • lerato.kay.3 - 2012-07-02 16:58

Death rate in our mines is rising at a shocking rate, the government must apply hefty penalties to mining companies who do not meet safety standards. The sad part is that the most unfortunate poor workers are always the victims. To some extend I also believe their plight is not receiving any attention.

  • Graham.Cooper2 - 2012-07-02 17:02

  • martin.britchford.5 - 2012-07-02 17:12

They are still completely quiet about the youth wage subsidy (which they don't want to allow to be implemented because they won't be able to recruit new union members to pay subscriptions) but are more than keen to get involved in comparing whites with rhinos and rhinos with blacks. Please step away and let those that can actually help develop and grow this country take control. Play time is over and we need to get to work.

  • elmarie.viljoen.7 - 2012-07-02 17:46

How did the fire start? Probably accidental? How can he even compare these two stories? Killing a Rhino is not accidental - its done ON PURPOSE and that is why we get mad!! Honestly!!!
