Johannesburg - More than a dozen people have been detained, but so far only one person has been charged for the murder of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa, police said on Monday.

"We have detained and questioned 13 people with regard to the killing of Senzo Meyiwa," divisional commissioner of detective services, Lieutenant General Vinesh Moonoo told reporters in Johannesburg.

"After questioning all the suspects, we decided to arrest only one at this stage. The individual arrested is 25-year-old Zanokuhle Mbatha from Vosloorus."

Meyiwa, who was also captain of Orlando Pirates, was killed in Vosloorus while visiting his singer and actress girlfriend Kelly Khumalo. Two people allegedly entered the house, demanded cellphones, shot Meyiwa, and fled.

Mbatha appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Friday, and the matter was postponed to 11 November.

Moonoo said police were at a stage where they could focus on a court-driven investigation and follow up on other leads.

"But this does not mean the end of the investigation. We have cast the net as wide as possible to look at each and every possibility," he said.

Moonoo said during the press conference that the man in custody did not match the identikit released by police.

“It was very disturbing that pictures of people published as the suspects [when they weren't], violates their rights,” he said.
