Most children abused by family - minister

2012-06-01 18:16

Durban - More than 90% of children are raped and abused by someone they know, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said on Friday.

"Both girls and boys are abused by people who are meant to be protecting them," he said in Folweni, south of Durban, at the start of a child protection campaign.

He said most children were raped by their fathers, step-fathers or uncles.

"Children are told by their families to lie about the abuse because it should be kept as a 'family secret'.

"The responsibility lies with the parents."

Mthethwa encouraged parents to report rape and abuse because it "kills children's self-confidence and future".

Carers should look out for warning signs and report abuse.

"Those who abuse do it with the support of women. A nation that doesn't protect its children doesn't have a future."

Mthethwa called on Folweni residents to work with police in fighting child abuse.

Can we have clarification of what the statistics are amongst race groups. If a white man in our family abuses a child in any way he will be beaten to a pulp.

      Dale - 2012-06-01 19:11

my white father did nothing to the white pig that sexually abused me a white boy !!! Do not make child abuse a racial thing - your statement is ignorant and factless !

      Stewart Croucamp - 2012-06-01 19:24

I in no way want to diminish the abuse of children of any race. I do however want the facts stated of where the majority of abuse cases lie and where we need to focus. Dale you are right that the pig who abused you should be exposed. I also know that this however will never give your dignity back that the pig took away from you. Forgive my ignorance.

I agree with you Mr Mthethwa. A rapist will be kept in prison for few months and there for he'll come out and terrorise or kill that child. Most families lose hope in our Govt because the protection of innocent child is not secure.

.. and yet at the next election you'll vote these same rapists into power. They are not only raping children.. they are raping this country. Put your cross where your mouth is.. People deserve the government they vote for!!

  • AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-06-01 18:52

The best prevention against (sexual) abuse is to have a good relationship with your children !!!!

  • David - 2012-06-01 18:54

If 90% are raped by family, only 10% of SA children are not raped, get the English right.

      Barry Walker - 2012-06-01 19:29

@David thanks, I was thinking the same thing, more like 90% of kids who are raped are raped by family etc... If 90% of our children were raped then there really is no hope for mankind!

  • Godfrey - 2012-06-01 19:06

If this was not such a serious matter, I would have joked and suggested that it appear that children are safer with strangers.

  • Willie - 2012-06-01 19:10

Mr Minister please do better research or have more competent people do it for you because there are segments of the population where abuse of children is not common

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-06-01 19:32

Mr Willie, Please tell us, WHICH segmemts of the population ??

  • Lynda - 2012-06-01 19:35

gee how badly worded was this piece, I also thought he meant 90% of all children are raped

The ignorance in the comments is astounding. In my extended group of WHITE middle class friends the amount of abuse/rape is incredible. If any of your are insinuating that abuse is rare in the white community, you're very very very wrong. Most people just hide it because of the shame.

From my experience as a District Surgeon ( more than 34 years in Cape Town and still working )more than 75% of children who are raped , the perpetrator is a family member e.g.father,stepfather,uncle,cousin, brother. The other 25% are raped by a family friend, live-in-lover,teacher,neighbour or a stranger.Usual age of the victim is under 15 years and latest figures are that approx. 30% of these are between three months and ten years !! An alarming recent trend over the past couple of years is that boys in the age range of 9yrs to 12 yrs are raping girls between the ages of 5yrs and 8yrs - very sad and disgusting.Improve moral values with education and parents should take more responsiblity for the actions and especially the whereabouts of their children. The NPA and Dept. of Justice should also be more severe in the sentencing of these criminals!

  • Sean Bissett - 2012-06-01 21:51

The statement is somewhat incorrect. 90% of children who are raped is done so by family members rather than saying that 90% of children are raped by family!!!

  • Sérgio - 2012-06-02 07:39

You heartless, dispassionate monster of a minister, it took you more the 15 years to come up with a worthless bill. Lets celebrate your lack of ability; LET’S blame the parents AND PROMOTE you for president…you monster minister, its ease of you to find excuses than decency with care for our children…….

  • Ntshobs - 2012-06-02 08:22

More than 90% of children are raped and abused by someone they know, This minister is either drunk or had a pinch of NYAOPE.

      Dakey - 2012-06-02 12:23

I think (to be clear), he's saying that more than 90% of children raped/abused are raped/abused by someone they know. Not 9/10 children are raped/abused.

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-06-02 09:30

Just goes to show how sick society is becoming under anc rule.

      Dakey - 2012-06-02 12:26

Mike, the 11 people I know that were raped/abused were all white. Half of those incidents were families in Europe, not even S.Africa. I can't stress how SERIOUS this issue is. Don't trust anyone. Considering at least 7 out of 10 men on the internet admit to watching porn at least once per month, would you really feel comfortable knowing your child might be in the care of a man with some sort of sexual addiction? I've recently had to revisit my children staying with someone because the husband has a serious addition to porn. I'm sorry I'm just not taking any chances.

  • Dakey - 2012-06-02 12:21

Finally a truthful article and something I've known for a while. Shocking but I know of 11 people that were abused as children. In only ONE case was the abuse brought to justice (the father committed suicide before the trial could go to court). The problem here is that families are too ashamed to discuss it. If you're a woman and your husband abuses one of your children, do you open yourself to that kind of public embarrassment? Who will provide for your family when your husband is in prison? I only pray this MAJOR ISSUE can be discussed more and more as it affects a very large number of people.
