Durban - The mother of the two toddlers who died when a fire broke out at the Westpoint Lodge on Victoria Embankment will be questioned this week, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.

"The mother was referred for trauma counselling on Friday and detectives will meet her this week for questioning," Colonel Jay Naicker said.

A 1-year-old girl and her 3-year-old brother died in the blaze.

"The toddlers died of smoke inhalation," Naicker said.

The 27-year-old mother had reportedly gone out to the shops at the time of the fire.

An inquest docket had been opened.

Compulsory sterilisation should be enforced on parents who can't look after their kids. Accidents do happen anywhere but to leave two toddlers alone even for five minutes is pure stupidity!
