Pietermaritzburg - A woman who has admitted feeding her two children porridge laced with Rattex in a bid to kill them before she had a change of heart, was referred to a district surgeon on Wednesday to determine her mental health.

Her attorney Jay Sundar told Magistrate M Boikhutso that the woman — Slindile Mtolo, 20 — maintains she is not suffering from any mental illness. However, it was considered prudent for her to undergo an examination before the court rules on the question of bail on Thursday.

Mtolo, who is from Tamboville area, is charged with the attempted murder of her two sons, aged four months old and two years old, on June 16.

In support of her application for bail she said she would not be able to receive the child support grant she obtains in respect of the children if she remains in custody.

The investigating officer Warrant Officer Alvin Freddy said in an affidavit that the incident was sparked by the fact that Mtolo had a “problem” with the father of the children who didn’t want to maintain them.

On the day in question she laced their porridge with Rattex and fed it to them. However, when they started vomiting, she ran to a neighbour and then called the police and handed herself over.
