Durban - A motorcyclist is fighting for his life after hitting a car on Umhlanga Rocks Drive near La Lucia on Friday.

The quiet of the upmarket neighbourhood was shaken when an aeromedical helicopter landed at the crash scene to airlift the injured rider to hospital.

Crisis Medical spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said when medics arrived they found the motorcycle had driven into the back of the car.

“The motorcyclist, a 29-year-old male, was ejected over his handlebars in the collision. He sustained critical head injuries and advanced life support intervention was needed to stabilise him before he was placed onto a mechanical ventilator to assist him with breathing,” he said.

“A call was made by our emergency control centre for aeromedical assistance and Air Mercy Services were activated to the scene,” van Reenen added.

The roadway had to be closed in both directions to make provision for the helicopter to land.

“The patient remained in a critical condition and was airlifted to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital for the immediate critical care he required,” he said.

In another incident, a man was killed and thirteen others were injured when a truck, minibus taxi and a car collided on the N3 near Pinetown.

RescueCare spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said that the injured were treated and stabilised at the scene before they were rushed to hospital by ambulance.
