Motorcyclists killed in KZN crash

2012-06-30 18:00

Johannesburg - Two motorcyclists were killed on Umlaas Road near Thornville in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday afternoon, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said the men in their 50s were part of a group of motorcyclists when they broke away from the group and drove ahead.

"As the other motorcyclists turned a corner, they found the two strewn across the road," he said.

The men were declared dead at the scene.

It was not clear what caused the accident as there were no other vehicles involved.

Speed? Sad news. So many motorcyclists losing their lives.

      barry.mcbride - 2012-06-30 18:50

yeah, speeding recklessly because they "broke away from the group" and then collided on or near a corner with "no other vehicles involved". case closed, next.

      yar.wellnofine - 2012-06-30 22:42

If you want to ride fast, do it at the track. The roads are dangerous.

      henk63 - 2012-07-01 10:29

Sorry Dries jy het gevra hiervoor.

      jacques.turner.315 - 2012-07-02 15:55

To Dries I hope you never have to experience losing a loved one. That person that you speak so callously about happens to be my brother-in-law. He was married to my sister for 23 years. He has 2 children- one sixteen and one six. He was a wonderful father who dearly loved his children and was a devoted husband. How dare you not take into account their feelings. We all loved him and he was a well respected person. All I can say is that I feel sorry for you. Think of how they feel when they read your comments, or do you have no feelings for your fellow human?

  • coen.smit.5 - 2012-06-30 20:28

They died doing what they love, more than us corporate slaves can do. Condolences to their families

      SaleƩ - 2012-06-30 22:10

      I'd rather they didn't die.

      jan.vanrensburg.988 - 2012-07-01 00:26

They died luckily they didnt take INNOCENT people with them due to the reckless behaviour.

  • andrew.martin.71619533 - 2012-06-30 21:24

i wish people would get their facts straight before commenting......freaks me out sometimes....and thats a fact.

      jan.vanrensburg.988 - 2012-07-01 00:26

      sarge.armstrong.7 - 2012-07-02 08:45

I agree with you Andrew, if these people weren't there don't make any comments.R.I.P Brothers

      Felicity Jane De Bruin - 2012-07-03 12:20

these guys were legends who knew how to ride they were not stupid idiots that rode recklessly the one was the president of the club and the best brother that insisted that his group rode safely his death is a great loss to the biking fraternity

  • mthetheleli.ntshobololo.1 - 2012-06-30 22:33

See them when they maneuver between cars in a traffic, breaking all rules of the road.

      sarge.armstrong.7 - 2012-07-02 08:34

Lane splitting is not breaking the rules

  • kelvyn.davidson.1 - 2012-07-01 07:50

R 56 is rated as one of the most dangerous roads in the country, some of the most beautiful riding stretches too, sadly speed can only be a contributor here, at 60km/hr there are some tights switchbacks which can get you caught out, at 100km/h overshooting is easy, but this is me talking as an experienced rider, not some moron behind his key board, judging bike riders because they died ! Have some respect for bike riders, we dice with death every day due to reckless and careless drivers, we get a head of traffic because its the safest place to be and that why we ride bikes, not to sit in traffic, all you judgemental genius's should try it , live for once !! - 2012-07-01 08:16

To me it sounds more like a case of speed and incompetence and the two made contact in the corner. Kelvyn.davidson.1 I fully agree you bikers dice with death everyday. In my suburb these idiots start at 14h00 and carry on until 20h00 on large bikes. The machines are revved until the cut-out mechanism comes into operation. they are not heroes but fools. The energy aspect of SPEED KILLS.

      Kelvyn - 2012-07-01 08:39

@Zion, selfish people are just that, I too would be P'd off if idiots revved their bikes in my area, but these people are not the entire bike riding fraternity, I too get P'd off with super bike riders doing 200km/h + overtaking on the inside yellow line, taking chances, we all get a bad name for a few, when riding a bike is about freedom, excitement, being alone, getting to work on time !

      jean.holmes1 - 2012-07-01 13:06

Nicely put Kelvyn. I had a call at 9am this morning informing me of the accident as I do know one of the guys killed. I've known him for over 24 years and biking was his life. He's escaped a few harrowing accidents but it was in his blood! He lived for his cycling and at least he died doing what he loved best. He was not wreckless, so until we know the circumstances of this accident, let's not jump to conclusions.
