Pretoria - The quality of education relies heavily on
teachers' ability to deliver the curriculum, Education Minister Angie Motshekga
said on Tuesday.
"South Africa continues to grapple with formidable
challenges associated with the quality of teaching," she said in Pretoria.
"We know that this is a very serious matter with a
plethora of research studies pointing to the impact of the quality of teachers
on the quality of education."
She said quality education could be provided through
professional development of teachers.
Motshekga was speaking at the launch of the National
Professional Teachers' Organisation of SA's (Naptosa) Institute for
Professional Development.
Motshekga said the institution would help improve teacher
quality.
Pupils could not be expected to change their performance if
teachers continued doing what they had always done, she said.
"We like to see teachers being excited about learning
on a life-long basis, being on time, teaching and improving the quality of
learning in their schools."
