Motshekga defends education D-G

2012-11-09 10:50

Cape Town - Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has defended her director general Bobby Soobrayan, who is under investigation for late textbook deliveries in Limpopo.

"The fact he gets investigated doesn't say anything about his integrity. It's a question of timing, whether he was too bureaucratic," she told 567CapeTalk radio on Friday.

"It's about whether he could have acted much more quicker and that's what the Public Services Commission (PSC) is going to investigate."

In a previous interview with the radio station, Motshekga apparently praised Soobrayan.

President Jacob Zuma decided at the beginning of October that the PSC should investigate Soobrayan following a report by the presidential task team into late textbook deliveries.

This was to do with, among other things, his alleged indecisiveness after receiving a letter from the textbook publishers in December last year.

Situation in 2013

In the letter, the publishers reminded him that learner, teacher support materials had not been ordered for the Limpopo education department.

He also apparently failed to provide the necessary support when the Limpopo department of education was placed under national administration.

In the report, the task team recommended that Soobrayan be investigated.

Motshekga gave the assurance that there would not be a repeat of the textbook crisis next year.
Describing Limpopo in 2013, she said: "Right books, right time, right venue."

On Thursday, she said textbook deliveries to the province would be done before Christmas.

"The final administration of the entire project must be completed by 13 December 2012."

The National Treasury had committed R380m for the 2013 procurement and delivery process, with additional funding for stationery packs, she said.

Deliveries to schools had already begun earlier this month, and would be accelerated to the rate of 200 a day, she said.

Motsekga and her DG need to be booted to the wrong side of the Correctional Services Department. The "inside" if you get my drift.

      LeahKnott28 - 2012-11-09 11:09

      agreed 100%

      LutherKingsley - 2012-11-09 11:14

The corrupt and criminal defending the corru.......whats new

      alan.jerrold - 2012-11-09 11:20

Yep, Motshekga is in no position to 'defend' anyone. She herself needs to be fired. She is only in position because of her political connections, and not because of any ability.

      charlesbronson.bronson - 2012-11-09 11:27

Useless bafoons in positions for buddies. The same as the useless corrupted tax thief Jacob Compound Zuma!!

      tim.gordon.5011516 - 2012-11-09 11:28

"too bureaucratic" is a euphemism for incompetent. He may be a nice guy but he is too useless to do his job.

  • ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-11-09 11:05

Angie is a liar. it had nothing to do with bureacracy. everything the ANC does is simply tainted with ineptitude and corruption

  • LeahKnott28 - 2012-11-09 11:05

Um, so what happened to all those students that didn't get books this year, or am I the only person that thinks that this is still a problem?????

      kala.bafazi - 2012-11-09 11:10

I agree. And what about all the kids in the Northern Cape. This Mofo has possibly ruined the future of hundreds of kids.

  • mark.dare.35 - 2012-11-09 11:08

Fantastic. Cadre deployment and cadre protection, no matter what. If the voters in Limpopo vote the ANC into power again in 2014, then they DESERVE this kind of mismanagement and absolute corruption. A nation of sheep gives rise to a government of wolves. And of course Zuma will protect Motshekga because she is one of his cadres and will vote for him in December. Actual delivery of education has nothing to do with this.

  • litha.luzipo - 2012-11-09 11:10

Who takes angie seriously? What is her qualification from which university? According to her everything in SA runs perfectly.

      heini.botes - 2012-11-09 12:01

      Cadre deployment my friend

      J.Stephen.Whiteley - 2012-11-09 12:10

      M.A. B.Ed. Wits.

  • tresor.mpika.9 - 2012-11-09 11:13

Obviously the minister will defend the DG because if the DG goes down he will take the minister down with him. both of these incompetant cadre deployee need to leave the departments to people who have the experience

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-11-09 11:18

and this must apply to all other departments as well

  • CeeCee.Thwala - 2012-11-09 11:14

Angie Matshekga is such a stubborn woman who is very incompetent. Of course she would not identify incompetence on her fellow comrade Bobby. The state of education in this country is already in shambles and sadly we have women like Angie at the forefront. How do we trust someone who defends her colleaugues's lack of accountability instead of condemning the issue. She has spent more time defending herself than delivering and performing her job description. No wonder she stays on Zuma's hips, she's learning from the best. Angie must go!!!

  • sydthefirst - 2012-11-09 11:23

Fire them both. They are useless and their acts were criminal.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-11-09 11:32

Motshega, another incompetent minister in government. She should have gone long ago.

      helmut.smrz - 2012-11-09 13:02

Oh yes and her director general the bobbejaan

  • Stephen Matthew - 2012-11-09 11:38

  • Phindile Manganyi - 2012-11-09 11:42

why do we have to wait for crisis to be proactive??clearly its possible that things are done in time, properly planned, yet we prefer being reactive. Then we wonder why mine & farm workers start acting like rebels, simple because our govt prefer being placed under pressurising conditions to act as expected

  • Samuel - 2012-11-09 11:53

Y can't this woman f..en keep quite, she is embarrassing herself further and she stop defending instead she shud take blame and apologise finish en klaar!!!!!!!

  • siphobongohead - 2012-11-09 11:53

Seems like somebody was waiting for something to be in an envelope in the desk drawer - as usual in the corrupt ANC government

  • mike.lamb.7777 - 2012-11-09 11:56

If "It's about whether he could have acted much more quicker " is a direct quote, than it says nothing for our Minister of Education.

  • heini.botes - 2012-11-09 12:00

Angie Motshekga defends D-G....of course she does. Corrupt defending the corrupt. Nothing's changed

  • clayton.sibanda - 2012-11-09 12:01

shouldn't she be the minister of defence...coz thats what she's been doing during her tenure

      willem.d.jager - 2012-11-09 13:11

      hahaha! nice one clayton!

  • lungile.manjiya - 2012-11-09 12:07

She can justify as much as she can, bottom line is that she is clueless, incompetent and could not give a damn about those poor kids... The gov. of the day does not take interest of people at heart,so sad

  • Eterni80 - 2012-11-09 12:18

working for the ANC means that if you F up on a grand scale, you'll be guaranteed job security as incompetence is a primary requirement when applying for a job with organisation (now there's a contradiction terms) if you swap spit with JZ you automatically get a get out of jail free card, a promotion a free car, free travel, bottomless (tax funded) credit card and possibly an upgrade to your house. I hope I live long enough to P on the ANC's grave.

  • braamc - 2012-11-09 12:21

Take your hand bag, this useless DG and probably the bulk and voetsek. Disgraceful, incompetent liar and oxygen and otherwise thieve.

  • litha.luzipo - 2012-11-09 12:28

How did we get to this point as a country. Incompetent dectator President, who created a lot of disfunctional departments. Children and women what what, Human settlement, coperate affairs, rural what what, etc. Look at these ministers and tell me if there is hope.stubborn minister of education, clueless ministers of justice, stupid minister of police, transport, stupid minister of defence.

      heini.botes - 2012-11-09 12:37

How did we get here you ask....ask the millions of sheep voters. But we will see in 2014, here's hoping, i mean, how stupid can you be voting cANCer in office again

      themba.thwala.775 - 2012-11-09 12:50

@heini.botes, you are no different from the sheeple. How does your preaching to the converted help your sexual frustration again? Luzipho clearly knows how to vote. Should you not join other sheeple as a sheeple yourself and preach to them?

      heini.botes - 2012-11-09 14:24

Didn't refer to litha when i said 'how stupid can you be', i was talking about the millions off sheeps who would vote cANCer for a piece of chicken just to suffer the rest of the 4 years.

  • robin.stobbs.9 - 2012-11-09 12:43

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga - YOU should be standing in the dock. You failed miserably in your dity as minister to see that your 'ship' is watertight and seaworthy. You, as 'captain of the education ship' are solely responsible for the education disaster our kids are having to cope with. YOU SHOULD BE FIRED - WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT!

  • Lesetja Kgabo Malapile - 2012-11-09 12:47

mama stop playing stupid cause we are not idiots cause u and him are behind the damn delaying of textbooks so how can u stand up for someone where's even u r corrupt......its ppl like u that r making SA a bad place for some of us

  • isaac.digomo.5 - 2012-11-09 12:48

Good day Minister. Just reminding you that Limpopo genocide will haunt you forever. That's how you will be remembered. That will be you trade mark. We cannot forget. Pass my greetings to you equally arrogant husband.

  • jon.jones.90663894 - 2012-11-09 12:58

Can someone my age please remind me of any time in the 'old' SA when this sort of thing happened in ANY education department ??????????????????.....

      andre.dekock.71 - 2012-11-09 13:11

Even the books to the Oppressed were delivered on time!

  • baldersnatch - 2012-11-09 13:18

"It's a question of timing, whether he was too bureaucratic" Lol! No. I'd say it's more likely to be tender corruption. If you fail to deliver after a month, you don't get paid and the person in charge of managing these deals finds somebody who will do it. It's not that hard to set an alarm in your fancy iphone/google/whatever calendar to follow something up. They probably have assistants who can do this for them too.

  • klipkop.degroote - 2012-11-09 13:25

"Right books, right time, right venue." all righty then, will wait and see and I promise you, you will get it wrong again. A reminder Angie, it is November 2012 already!

  • altus.kirsten - 2012-11-09 13:34

She has a passion-gap for education!

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-11-09 14:34
