Johannesburg - The OR Tambo district in the Eastern Cape is in dire need of a health infrastructure overhaul, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said on Friday.

"Important infrastructure, such as sewerage, buildings, electricity connections, and equipment, need replacement or are non-existent," Motsoaledi told delegates at a SA Chamber of Business and Industry meeting in Johannesburg.

The district was one of 11 selected to launch the National Health Insurance (NHI) pilot project.

The pilot project was launched in April 2012 in the districts' public health facilities.

Nine hundred health facilities out of 4000 in the country were part of the pilot project, Motsoaledi said.

Gert Sibande district in Mpumalanga was faring better compared to the OR Tambo district, but also needed infrastructure and equipment, he said.

The pilot project saw the launch of school health programmes in which schoolchildren were screened, immunised, and treated in mobile clinics at schools.

"The school programme is important to ensure that our children do not come across the health problems we go through."
