Johannesburg - One-time Cape Town mayor Peter Marais has established a movement to fight for the rights of coloured people, the Sunday Times reported.

"Coloureds don't have power," Marais told the newspaper in describing the position of coloured people in political positions in the Western Cape.

In the interview, Marais said his movement would not start off as a political party.

"The triple B [Bruin Bemagtigingbeweging - Coloured Empowerment Movement] will not become a political party."

Marias said he would not "shy away" from a comparison of his movement to that of the Broederbond.

"I want to see coloured people in important, senior positions."

However, Marais later said that a political party could emerge after the movement held its conference in June.

"If they can come together, 4.8 million of them, and say enough is enough."

Marais denied the establishment of the movement was an attempted comeback.

"I will not walk in front," he said.
