Durban - Socialite Shauwn Mpisane, who is facing multiple charges of fraud, ushered in 2014 by treating herself and her husband, Sbu, to identical Rolls-Royces.

Given to each other as “batons of hope” for 2014, their combined R17m purchase came ahead of a lavish New Year’s Eve party at their La Lucia mansion, reported the Sunday Times.

About 100 guests attended including former police commissioner Bheki Cele.

The party comes just a month after the couple treated staff at their Zikhulise Cleaning, Maintenance and Transport company, to gifts ranging from plasma TVs, smartphones and home-theatre systems through to cheques of up to R25 000.

Meanwhile, Shauwn is scheduled to appear in court this month in connection with two separate cases. In the Durban Commercial Crimes Court she will face 53 charges of fraud after being accused of submitting forged documents to obtain gradings from the Construction Industry Development Board which were used to win R140m in tenders from the public works department.

In the second case in the Pinetown Regional Court, she will appear on charges of having interfered with a witness in another fraud case against her. In that case she is accused of inflating invoices by R4.7m in an attempt to evade paying tax. She faces 119 counts of fraud in that matter.

Love of cars

In August 2013 Mpisane handed over more than R5.6m in cash in return for six of the cars seized by the Asset Forfeiture Unit, The Mercury reported at the time.
Cars to the value of R22m were seized from the Mpisanes, the National Prosecuting Authority said in a statement in February.

The cars included a Rolls Royce Phantom, a Rolls Royce Ghost, a Maserati, a Ferrari Scaglietti, a Porsche Cayenne Turbo and a Panamera Turbo, two armoured BMW 5 series and two Hummers.

Two of their Porsches, the Maserati, the Ferrari, a BMW and a Dodge Ram were returned to the couple’s showroom-styled garage at their La Lucia home.
