Mbombela - More than 300 police officers in Mpumalanga have no matric certificates, the provincial police said on Wednesday.

"Currently, 392 members do not have the certificates," Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said in a statement, pointing out that a matric was not a prerequisite for employment before 1994.

He said programmes such as Adult basic education and training were available to help the officers to improve their skills and knowledge.

"There is also a programme to acquire NQF level five, which is run by the national office.

"We will continue to uplift the lives of our members through constant training and development."

Mohlala said 145 police officers in the province did not have driver's licences. He said 31 of them were receiving driver training to acquire licenses and the others had learner's licences.

He said a driver's licence was also not a prerequisite for employment by the police before 1994.
