Mpuma man sentenced to 20 years in jail

Mbombela - A man was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Mbombela Regional Court for attempted murder on Wednesday.

Wander Sibusiso Shikwambane, 26, from Shabalala Trust outside Hazyview was sentenced after he was found guilty of robbing and stabbing Elvis Malambe on 7 June 2008, a Sapa correspondent reported.

The court heard that Malambe was attacked by three young men at night, who robbed him of a Nokia cellphone and R230 before stabbing him.

"Evidence by the doctor who [treated] the victim stated it clearly before court that he is lucky to be alive, due to the seriousness of the stab wounds," Magistrate Andre Geldenhuys said.

"The court therefore finds you guilty on the two counts, which are armed robbery and attempted murder."

Shikwambane was sentenced to 15 years for the armed robbery and 10 years for the attempted murder charge.

Five years of the 10 years for attempted murder would run concurrently with the 15 years for attempted murder, while the other five would run consecutively.

Geldenhuys said Shikwambane had pleaded not guilty, lied to the court and also skipped bail on three occasions after he was released on warning.

"You were later re-arrested in custody in 2010 after police arrested you for another criminal matter.

"You have been kept in custody ever since," he said.

Geldenhuys said despite the fact that the two men were neighbours, Shikwambane did not show any remorse for what he did to Malambe.

"As an elderly person, the victim did not deserve to be robbed of his belongings or attacked in that manner.

"In evidence presented before court three of you attacked him and he didn't bother to fight you back.

"There was no need to hurt him. You should have just taken what you wanted and left him unharmed," Geldenhuys said.

He said any person who terrorised others was a danger to the community and should be removed from society.

"You should have stopped doing crime as you have two young children to support... "

Geldenhuys said although Shikwambane had pleaded not guilty to stabbing Malambe, he was implicated as one of the three people who attacked him.
