Malalane - An Mpumalanga man who raped and robbed an 18-year-old girl was sentenced to life in jail by the Tonga Regional Court on Tuesday.

Khamon Khoza, 38, of Middelplaas village near the Swazi border, was arrested on 16 October 2012, after raping and robbing the teenager in Middelplaas, a Sapa correspondent reported.

During his trial, the victim told the court she was walking with her boyfriend when Khoza accosted and threatened them with a knife before raping her.

Magistrate Edgar Moletsane said Khoza had put the teenager's life at risk.

"Sir, you didn't use a condom and that put her life in danger of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy. I want those who still want to commit a similar crime to learn a lesson from your sentencing, because our government has tried so many times to teach people to respect women and children in society, but people like you just ignore that," he said.

Khoza had a former rape conviction dating back to 2004. Moletsane said he had not learned his lesson then, but would now.

Moletsane sentenced Khoza to life imprisonment for rape and to two years' jail for robbery.
