Mbombela - A 52-year-old Mozambican man who pleaded guilty to raping his 7-year-old niece while drunk was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment by the Nelspruit Regional Court on Wednesday.

He may not be named to protect the victim, who is his brother's daughter. He raped her in Barberton in August 2012 and was linked to the rape through DNA evidence.

After pleading guilty, he asked the court for a lenient sentence because he had a wife and six children in Mozambique, and another wife in Barberton.

"I plead guilty freely and voluntarily without any undue influence,” he said in a statement read to the court.

“I admit that on the night I was drinking liquor. I walked into the child's room and raped her. I understand that my act is wrong and is punishable by law," he said.

Magistrate Vanessa Joubert said the court was pleased that he did not waste the court's time and sentenced him to 18 years in jail.

Another man, from Pienaar near Mbombela, facing 14 charges of rape, one of robbery with aggravating circumstances, one of housebreaking and one of assault, appeared in the same court.

He was arrested on June 6 2014, for crimes committed in 2009, 2013 and 2014. He was not asked to plead to the charges and applied for Legal Aid.

The man would remain in custody until his next appearance on Friday.
