Mbombela - Mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane will join Mpumalanga community-builder Richard Mabaso on an expedition up Mount Kilimanjaro to highlight the plight of underprivileged schoolgirls across Africa.

Mabaso - the founder of Imbumba Foundation - would be guided up the mountain in Tanzania by Vilane to raise funds to buy 67 000 packets of sanitary towels for impoverished schoolgirls, a Sapa correspondent reported.

"This idea came to me after I realised that most underprivileged girls in our country miss up to 50 days of schooling due to menstrual challenges," said Mabaso, who lives in Luphisi outside Mbombela.

"I have always wanted to climb the mountain, but I needed a significant reason and raising money for poor girls crossed my mind."

Mabaso said the expedition would take place between 7 and 12 July.

The initiative would also form part of Mandela Day celebrations in July, he said.

The Imbumba Foundation has been helping schoolgirls through its Caring4Girls campaign in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
