Malalane - An Mpumalanga man accused of stabbing and hacking his mother to death was declared a State President's patient on Tuesday after psychiatric records established that he was mentally unstable.

Sondelani Magagula, 27, of Magogeni Trust near the Swazi border in Mpumalanga, appeared in the Tonga Regional Court, a Sapa correspondent reported.

He had pleaded not guilty to murder.

Magistrate Edgar Moletsane told the court that Magagula's psychiatric doctor's report revealed that he was not mentally stable when he committed the crime.

Magagula committed the murder on 20 August 2013.

Investigating officer Constable Given Nguyuza previously testified that Magagula was arrested after he was apprehended by members of the community.

He was found exiting his mother's house with a bloodied bush knife.

"I got the information that Magagula went to his late mother's house in the morning holding a bush knife, shouting and showing anger," said Nguyuza.

He said the mother told the children who were in the house to run and seek shelter at her neighbour's house because they might be killed.

"After some few minutes Magagula came out of the house still shouting. His bush knife had some blood stains on it. When we arrived at the house, his mother was lying dead in a pool of blood with some stabbing and cut wounds on her body and head," Nguyuza said.

He said the woman's right hand was cut off and there was a spear next to her lifeless body.

Moletsane said Magagula would be taken to a place of safety as he was a State President's patient.
