Mpumalanga learners licences cancelled

Johannesburg - The Mpumalanga government has cancelled 39 learners' licences after video footage showed an examiner and a technician helping candidates with the test, it said on Sunday.

The candidates, examiner and technician had been informed about the irregularities and been given an opportunity to explain their involvement in the incident , said the province's community safety, security and liaison department.

Their responses were unsatisfactory, said spokesperson Joseph Mabuza.

He said the incident happened at the Mhala testing centre in September.

"The technician, who worked for a private company, has been fired by his employer for his involvement, and the examiner was removed from the centre by his employer, the local municipality," said Mabuza.

He said the candidates were barred from applying or being issued with licences for a period of 12 months, in line with the National Road Traffic Act.

MEC Vusi Shongwe said driver incompetence, because of testing irregularities, was one of the factors which contributed to road accidents.

"This is an indication of what is happening in some of the testing stations," he said.

"We will not allow such irregularities to be the order of the day. This will serve as an example to other applicants and officials who are also involved in such actions."

CCTV technology would gradually be extended to other testing stations in the province to fight corruption.

Don't these people realise that the paltry bribe that they take for this could potentially be blood money? They send these unlicenced drivers out onto the road without the necessary skills and they could cause major accidents! Driving on the roads is challenging even to experienced legal drivers, this lot don't stand a chance..

This is not only in Mpumalanga, this is happening in the little dorpie I stay in (Empangeni) My maids son has failed his learners twice, then he was told to bring R500 and take it to a certain lady. She takes him to her house and feeds him the paper plus the answers, and guess what....Monday he will pass his learners. Presumable, the same when it comes to obtaining a driving licence, so now you know that it does'nt matter where you live, in a big town or a little dorpie like me corruption in governments depts flows stronger than water. Thats why until government starts setting an example of these corrupt people it will continue to get worse. Try applying for a job in transnet or any government dept, they have to put money under the table and their application will be put forward, it does'nt mean they will get the job but at least it does'nt her thrown in the bin. This country is corrupt from the president right down to the tea girl in each and every dept.

And we wonder why there are so many taxi accidents and trucks who's brakes fail and buses veering off the road. This explains everything in technicolour. Sorry but evry licence issued since the ANC took over is suspicious.

      brendaanne.anderson - 2012-10-22 09:13

@leon.vanderlinde - "EVERY licence is suspicious" I beg to differ. We spent a living fortune paying for our 2 boys to receive driving lessons so that they were comfortable with K53 and had learnt how to respect a motor vehicle. We booked their tests and they passed them legitimately. The use of the word "every" insinuates that we were prepeared to allow our children to bribe their way to their drivers licences - I take exception to that.

Guys, This is seriously scary stuff but you know what, even if we all pass it without any corruption, it all means nothing if our attitude is wrong. If we just don't give a hoot once we are on the road and do as we wish. We need enforcement and lots of it! At lease until attitudes on the road change.

Learners Licences cancelled. Thirtynine leaner drivers had their licences canceledd because it was proved that a tecnician and the examiner were helping them with their tests. This is nothing new it happenes every day and it is aknown fact that many are actually buying theirr licences for R38000. Also some of the municipal examiners are involved with these so called driving schools. This is conflicting interest and nobody is doing anything about it. This is why the accident rate has increased because there are too many inexperienced drivers on the road. They dont stop at stop streets and robots. they drive at excesive speeds, overtake on the solid white line and drink and drive. If you say something to them they get very aggressive and acuse you of being a racalist. If everybody obeyed the traffic rules the accident rate could be cut by at least 80%. South African drivers must be among the worst in the world. Please drivers have some consideration and respect. You to can join Jub Jub and his drug friend in jail then you might learn a lesson the hard way.
