Nelspruit - A man was jailed for four years by the Nelspruit Regional Court on Monday for statutory rape.

Mentor Marule, 24, pleaded guilty to having sex with a 15-year-old girl on 1 January at his brother's house during New Year's Day celebrations, a Sapa correspondent reported.

He signed a sworn statement confirming that he had sex with a minor and had previously committed two other crimes.

Prosecutor Elise du Plessis told the court Marule, from Dayizenze near Hazyview, had been found guilty by the Hazyview Magistrate's Court on 11 September 2002 of stealing property.

On 12 July 2005, the Masoyi Magistrate's Court found him guilty of rape and sentenced him to 15 years in prison.

"In his stolen property case he was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment which was suspended for three years," said Du Plessis.

Magistrate Willie Wilkens, during sentencing, said Marule would be placed on the sexual offenders register.

"If I was sentencing you for rape today [Monday], you would get a life sentence, but because it’s a statutory rape case I will give you some years which will suit you and your community too," he said.
