Mbombela - More than 20 Mpumalanga teachers were arrested on Thursday for defrauding the SA Revenue Service (Sars) of R7m, the Hawks said.

A Sapa correspondent reported that the teachers, from the Ehlanzeni and Bohlabela educational districts, were arrested by the Hawks at their workplaces.

"We had 36 warrants of arrest in Mpumalanga. When I left this afternoon we had already arrested 22 and the arrests are still continuing," said police spokesperson Paul Ramoloko.

"Some of the teachers were found at school, while others were arrested at their education circuit offices. They allegedly defrauded the Sars through tax returns and the amount involved is R7m."

Ramoloko said the teachers would appear in four courts on Friday on charges of fraud.

"They are going to appear in KaBokweni, Komatipoort, Bushbuckridge, and Nelspruit magistrate's courts," said Ramoloko.

The crimes were committed in 2012.

"In the second phase of the arrests, we will be arresting Sars officials as well," he said.
