Mthethwa commends 'tireless' cops

2012-09-27 20:29

Johannesburg - The police officers who arrested the alleged killers of former world heavyweight boxing champion Corrie Sanders were commended by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa on Thursday.

"I wish to express my gratitude to the North West members of the police... who worked tirelessly," he said in a statement.

"Their dedication towards the safe-keeping of our society is a shining example of the kind of officers we expect, and are working towards sustaining."

Mthethwa urged police to continue their hard work to make sure that harsher sentences could be secured against those who committed violent crimes.

"We shall not allow criminals to rob us of heroes such as the late Corrie Sanders, who, in his heyday as a professional sportsman, inspired a lot of youngsters positively through his talent."

Police and communities needed to work together, as this was the most effective solution to rooting out crime.

Earlier, three men were arrested in the Oukasie informal settlement, near Brits, in connection with Sanders' murder, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

Police received a tip-off, which led to the arrest of three men around 10am.

They recovered property believed to have been stolen during the robbery in which Sanders was shot dead on Saturday.

The three men - two aged 20 and the other 19 - were Zimbabweans.

They would appear in Brits Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Sanders was at the Thatch Haven Country Lodge, in Brits, when armed robbers entered and began firing shots at random.

He was hit in the hand and abdomen, and died in the Kalafong Hospital on Sunday.

Sanders won the World Boxing Organisation's heavyweight title in March 2003, dropping Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko in the second round in Hanover, Germany.

He retired five years later.

What twaddle. They received a tip-off! No great detecting, no skill, no forensics, no .... I'm glad these guys were caught but lets not get carried away about the police quite yet.

3 Zimbabweans thugs, this is not the first time. These foreign rubbish must be sent back to their rubbish countries or the local citizens must sort them out. If you are a foreigner, law-abiding and you are contributing to the progress of SA then you are welcome. Again the ANC's fault, they basically opened up SA's borders to all the bras from Africa to walk in and do what they want at the cost of our local citizens.

      jock.black.50 - 2012-09-27 22:10

What arrogance and disrespect to go live in a foreign country then steal their jobs then kill and rape their people!!!.... not human beings, human garbage!

  • josie.russell.10 - 2012-09-27 20:47

SHUT THE BLOODY BORDERS - more Zimbabwians here than in Zimbabwe!

  • Savethe White O - 2012-09-27 20:55

Too easy to come and do crime in SA. there may be one or two cops doing what they are payed to do but for ever 1 doing his job there are most likely 150 doing nothing but enriching themselves

      nkosikhonorman.ludidi - 2012-09-28 02:02

I live 20km outside Brits on game farm , and want to say thank you for the Brits Police for catching the killers. I am so proud of you and must say if we have a problem you always assist us, wish every one in South Africa can be so proud of the police as what I am here in Brits well done

      Savethe White O - 2012-09-27 21:00

Yeah great and how much do you have to sponser them every time, eish im thirsty

  • kumbulani - 2012-09-27 21:13

I once lived in Brits for 5 years. Oukasie is a no go area and what comes out of that place is shocking. Its a breeding place for rapists, thieves, murderers, you name them yet police wait for an incident then get a tip-off. They wld probably have more people out there in hiding in that location. Crime is crime nomatter who commits it. Justice must be applied

It is up to the Zimbabwean community in Africa to stop people who tarnish the reputation of all of us. These criminal live among us and many of them are our relatives and friends. We might think what they do is none of our business, but at the end of the day we are all affected by the reputation smear their actions generate. I therefore call upon all members of the Zimbabwean community to volunteer information to the police regarding people they might know who are engaged in criminal acts.

      runyamhere - 2012-09-28 14:40

Agreed Punungwe, I was robbed by people I know from my hood in Zimbabwe. But those who stay among the thieves won't utter a word. Where I stay there is a disused home, a group of Zimbos stay there, when coming from the bar at about midnight they roll bins onto the road. Police won't arrest them saying there is no case. Maybe SAPS need to hire Zim CID to flush out the criminals because back home they dont get away with such stuff. Hillbrow & Yeovil is their heaven, what a shame on our people.

SQUEEGEE.PILOT. i am very disappointed with ur comment the investigation and forensic takes time but if the police get a tip-off while the investigation is on they go for it. i am not sure if u have any knowledge of the forensic u mentioned on ur comment. according to my understanding, whatever the police discovered on the scene on the day in question will be taken and sent to pretoria where the forensic investigation will be conducted and after about a month the report will be sent to the investigating officer. what i am trying to say here is that the police cannot wait for that report when there is an information they have received. what if while waiting for the forensic report the bustards cross the bordees and run away to their country of origin. we would be laughing at the police saying also sorts of nonsense. why can't u just join everyone and give credit where it's due. why do we have to condemn our police even if they r doing a great job, what more do we actually want from them? pls let's be reasonable and treat our police like human beings.

  • gregory.jurgens - 2012-09-28 05:34

All congrats due to the cops, but to say they working tirelessly for the safekeeping of the society doesn't make sense, murder, rape robbery is a daily occurrence in every town. Their tireless efforts definitely don't make me feel safe.

  • andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-09-28 06:52

And still the illegal's from Zim and Moz are allowed to remain SA and murder and plunder with nothing to lose. Xenophobia is starting to make a lot of sense!
