Farm attacks: Mthethwa's 'silence' slammed

2013-01-15 20:47

Johannesburg - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa remains silent on farm attacks to an extent that borders on collusion, Afriforum said on Tuesday.

"The minister's silence on the scourge of farm attacks is a disgrace," the civil rights organisation's deputy chief executive Ernst Roets said in a statement.

"If the minister is serious about the protection of South Africans, he would have declared farm attacks a priority crime years ago."

Roets was reacting to reports that an elderly couple were found dead on a farm near Parys, Free State, on Tuesday.

Mthethwa's spokesperson Zweli Mnisi said Afriforum was "racialising" the crime.

"Their allegations that the minister is not speaking out against farm attacks is a clear sign of selective analysis and listening," he said.

"We do not just speak out, we act against any criminality that occurs within farms, and when we speak about farm attacks, we do not racialise crime like they do."

He said the government intended dealing with all rural crime.

"As government we commit ourselves to fighting crime in whatever form it manifest[s] itself in our society - including farm killings."

Police spokesperson Colonel Thandi Mbambo said the couple was found dead in a tuck shop they ran from a garage on the farm on Tuesday.

"The husband was found on the floor of the tuck shop, with his feet tied and head covered with a material sack," she said.

The body of the woman, aged between 70 and 75, was found stuffed into a freezer. No visible injuries were found on their bodies.

The bodies were taken to the state mortuary where post mortems would be conducted to determine the cause of their deaths.

A domestic worker arrived at the house at 07:30 on Tuesday, found the farm house ransacked and the couple missing.

A neighbour arrived and helped search for them, until they were found in the tuck shop.

No arrests had been made.

It sounds like very cruel murders, like freezing to death. What terrible murderers and this country is so full of murderers that it is almost unbelievable. And we have become hardened to this news. It hardly shocks us. Sad sad country of so much promise.

      Dotmatrix - 2013-01-15 21:38

I was thinking the same thing last night. The news is so bad it desensitized so many. That I think promotes violence and crime because some might think its the norm.

      arie.vdplaats - 2013-01-15 22:13

Consider this quotations by Mthethwa's spokesperson Zweli Mnisi as reported in the article "We do not just speak out, we act against any criminality that occurs within farms, and when we speak about farm attacks, we do not racialise crime like they do." and also "As government we commit ourselves to fighting crime in whatever form it manifest[s] itself in our society - including farm killings." Who is he trying to kidd, except maybe himself? More farm murders are committed over any given time period than do soldiers die on a battlefield over the same time period. Surely this requires more and better concerted effort by the minister of police and less talk of the nature as per the quotations above.!!

      Jaap - 2013-01-16 00:58

Judith, the fact of the matter is that 99% of this extremely cruel murders are being committed by Black people on white people. I wish the Government will show the statistics of gruesome murders in our country and then point out the actual race of the criminal. The Apartheid era does not even come close to the number of murders committed in SA today. I looks like White species are in fact endangered species. O yes and only whites can commit racism.

      lynn.syme.1 - 2013-01-16 01:15

When old ladies and babies are raped and murdered - The President stands up and says we must stop killing old ladies and babies. This after a spate of the crud in KZN. When farmers are murdered, there is a noted, deathly silence from the powers that be. That alone speaks volumes.

@sibulele - I have seen many idiotic comments on this forum before and yours is right up there. The murder of political activists under the Apartheid regime cannot be compared to the murder of civilians by criminals. From your comment I can only assume that you condone murder, or at least the murder of white people, which leaves me wondering where, how and by whom you were brought up, your logic and moral compass are disgusting.

      JManAtheoi - 2013-01-16 07:38

@sibulele.jubase - where you even born then?

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-01-16 08:43

Sibulele.jubase. Yes, those were painful murders, and you people will never be willing to move past them. In other words using such painful happenings to keep racial hatred alive is a salve you use to camouflage your own shortcomings. You are not respecting the victims by using them to hide your own shortcomings.

      craven.luyt - 2013-01-16 10:44

So Sibulele you just admitted it. They are racist revenge killings. From the horses mouth.

The Minister is not concerned. He has enough body guards to protect him 24/7. He sure does'nt care about the Farmers.

      lorain.maseko - 2013-01-16 07:58

I agree with you on that one, I am also sick of hearing about farm murders.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-01-16 08:45

Johan.dekock.9. He also had a very expensive wall build around his house, courtesy of the taxpayers as usual.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-01-16 08:46

Lorain, maseko. Who knows the next farm murder you hear about could make you jump for joy.

      declan.kelly.54 - 2013-01-15 22:38

Hiring unskilled workers at minimum wage is not exploitation. It's called doing business. Minimum wage is not set by the farmers.

      riaan.mostert.58 - 2013-01-15 22:48

You are only exploited if you allow yourself to be exploited, you chop. Or are you too F-ing stupid to grow a backbone?

      JManAtheoi - 2013-01-16 07:40

@ tshepo - please write like a grown-up on this forum if you want to be taken seriously. Why do you 'ryte lyk dees'? Is it because you think its cool? Or don't you know otherwise?

  • hannah.p.mostert - 2013-01-15 21:13

There is a guy who got beaten by a golf club in gauteng today on news 24 and he has received more coverage than the farmers that have been murdered! It doesn't make me feel sorry for that man, it makes me think so bloody what

      amandla.whereto - 2013-01-16 05:56

@sibulele - you again, being idiotic! Not a single comment under the story regarding the assault at the golf club condoned it, well not that I read anyway, in fact almost every comment stated it to be disgusting and that the perpetrator should be brought to book. What do the likes above imply to your pea sized brain? I agree that murders should receive more coverage than an assault, your mindset is what started Apartheid in the first place, you Sir, are an idiot!

Innocent elderly farmers murdered. Robbery is a cover up of a motive never acknowledge, but is as clear as daylight. These predators are acting out some 'action movie' they saw. Ruthless and full of hate for a cause with the minister remain silent?. 'Shoot the boer' says it all.

  • matt.cumming.77 - 2013-01-15 21:45

The crimes are very clearly often overtly racist and brutal. The Minister isnt dealing with a crime alone, they are often HATE crimes; the worst crime possible. He must act openly and with as vigour as he does wasting tax payer's money opposing Zille.

  • rollingstone.kanyane - 2013-01-15 21:47

its now clear that farmers are being killed deliberately for fun then what farmers should also kill what ever they come across maybe Mthetwa will talk sense

      sally.lewitt - 2013-01-16 00:00

Yup! 10% of all farmers have been murdered..

  • sam.makua.10 - 2013-01-15 21:58

I or you will be doing this without a moment's thought of the impact of these rubbish and sensationalised comments. Right? Right

  • michil.chegwidden - 2013-01-15 22:01

kapt. Anna Phorotlho had done robbery in the Free State, what makes us think that there are more behind the farm attracts, may be this one is the head of attacks. Get rid of farm worker and employ white homeless people which will not strike. Form security groups within the communities.

  • Erna - 2013-01-15 22:03

Quite frankly the minister's silence on ALL crime is deafening. He only comments when he possibly looks good.

This is genocide. This is straight the plan of the ANC to murder white people. They wont admit it because they and the people DOING killings on farmers are COWARDS.

  • mzwandile.dlamanzi - 2013-01-15 22:46

In the WC the last time i checked we had competent MEC's or sorry ministers (applicable to wc only). Does this name ring a bell *Dan Plato* what is he saying??

  • willie.olivier.144 - 2013-01-15 23:01

Mr Zuma, I'm asking you on behalf of all my people, please make this senseless killing on the farms stop! It is enough! How many old people must die before this racial hatred stop?

      lusaniraidani - 2013-01-16 10:22

We are all South African and should all be concerned about crime on every person, not just white or black. Criminals thrive where they can do their dirty work without being noticed, farms provide that type of environment because they isolated. Nothing at all to do with colour. A black farmer who used to be an MP was reported killed in his farm last year, which shows that is is not factual that only whites are killed. Its mostly white farmers who die because they just happen to own most of the farms. We should come with suggestions about how security levels can be increased in all our areas so that we can build a better South Africa to live in.

      craven.luyt - 2013-01-16 11:56

John ever heard of criminal profiling? By torturing, disembowling, mutilating and humiliating their victims ( including babies) the perpetrators are telling us the motive is hate! Surely you can grasp this. A crime scene tells a lot about the perp. Don't be blind.

  • rollingstone.kanyane - 2013-01-15 23:25

@phol spot on the dancing spear must be taken to the hague to account cause the killing of farmers happened right under his nose

  • clement.mokone - 2013-01-16 02:42

We like or not our movemment is infested by leaders/people who are extremely corrupt, prey on the ignorant, destroy the spirit of the ANC and so forth. Zuma is a SHAMEFUL leader of the ANC ever. To say what the president has said is African culture is pure lies and a naked attempt to cover up their corrupt actitities. This is a farce indeed.it only tells the story why he was reelected-the delegates are looking to benefit from what they did(I.e reelecting him). But on the ground indeed the movement is hurting big time.

The anc's way of land reform genocide and affirmative action. No where on the artical was any race mentioned. The useless spokesman turned it into a race issue. The anc is the racist one.

  • bill.mckimm.9 - 2013-01-16 06:47

Hey Nathi, get your digit out of where iot shouldn't be, forget about Zille and her court case and get onto something that matters; even though your comrades are busing in troublemakers to cause problems. Think I am here for SA not the ANC. It might mean changing your mind set but do it manually if you have to. It might be an enlightening experience.

  • compos.mentis.58 - 2013-01-16 07:51

In 1941 Hitler created an environment in Lithuania, getting the Lithuanians to kill Jews, while his soldiers were told not to interfere. Same is happening here it seems. On various platforms white people, i and specifically white farmers are identified by politicians as the "evil under the bed" and then they sit back and wait. The SAPS are instructed to deal with farm attacks as with any other criminal incident. Therefore they do not need to create a special task force to investigate this. The agenda seems to be, let the criminals sort them out. But then again, Governments will never allow criminals to do their dirty work for them... now do they?

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2013-01-16 08:02

In fairness to Mthethwa, he is silent on all issues. I do not know what the man sounds like. He always seems to rely on his commissioners to be the vocal ones.

  • Jenny - 2013-01-16 08:14

So it is only the ANC who can racialise?

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-01-16 08:31

The silence of Mthethwa is nothing new. He only opens his mouth when he needs to eat.

  • TawwaTienie - 2013-01-16 08:39

    Silence is golden.
