CALM has returned to Mtubatuba following the tense by-elections there on Wednesday.

Independent Electoral Commission chairperson Mawethu Mosery said, “Yesterday [Wednesday] there were minor verbal clashes but there was no violence. The police were called and they intervened quickly. We were also there and we mediated and the matter was resolved.”

ANC and IFP supporters had clashed outside the Riverview voting station. The Witness understands that the clash started after ANC members tried to take pictures of the IFP members.

There were also allegations made by IFP members that people who did not live within the voting station boundaries were brought to the station, allegedly by ANC members.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said, “A case of contravening the Electoral Act was opened at Mtubatuba police station for investigation and no arrest has been made at this stage.” — Witness Reporter
