According to reports, the fire started in the mountains above Muizenberg and moved in the direction of Noordhoek and Hout Bay.

Theo Layne from City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services told News24 that approximately 300 firefighters are battling the blaze. The City has more than 30 firefighting vehicles on scene and is being assisted by Table Mountain National Park, Working on Fire and Volunteer Fire Services.

"The fire is contained in certain areas, but on the higher slopes of the mountain it is not contained yet," he said shortly after 07:00. "The wind is currently not too bad, but we are expecting high temperatures later in the day," he added.

Layne confirmed that four houses have burnt down, two of which had thatch roofs.

Houses have been evacuated, but residents of the old age home which was evacuated are being allowed back in, Layne said.

Ou Kaapse Weg, Chapman's Peak Drive and Boyes Drive have been closed to traffic, Eyewitness News reported.

Firefighters are reportedly lining the roads, battling to contain the flames.

A number of residents are assisting firefighters with water and refreshments, according to reports.
