Municipalities must work together

Johannesburg - Municipalities must work together to achieve clean administrations, Auditor General Terence Nombembe said on Tuesday.

"It is clear that if... we continue to work in isolation, the chances of us achieving greater mileage in local government are going to be compromised," he told a SA Local Government Association (Salga) conference in Midrand.

He suggested regular meetings of local government leaders to find ways to work together.

The arrangement should include Salga, provincial treasuries, the AG's office, provincial government departments and district municipalities.

"So that from time to time we do get together and say, what would be the ingredient... to achieve sound financial governance in local government," Nombembe said.

"This does not happen at the moment," he said.

A recent report by Nombembe found that only 13 out of 343 municipalities in South Africa achieved clean audits in the financial year 2011/12.

Yeah, maybe a good start would be if they answered their phones (i.e. Ekurhuleni)!

A good start would be to appoint competent people who can be held accountable. This way municipalities will KNOW what is expected of them, and money need not be wasted on transporting people to endless ineffective talkshop meetings - and feeding and entertaining them there while nothing is achieved. Mr Auditor General - if in your position this is the best you can offer, then I am afraid we are further down the road to a failed state than I ever imagined in my worst nightmares.

Or are they working together to screw us further???????

      jurie.nel.3 - 2012-09-11 15:21

Anyway, what a stupid idea. It would simply be a talkshow where the blind is led by the blind. I really am disappointed in the Auditor General.

We must work together - sorry just employ someone who is not corrupt, actually knows how to work, has a work ethic and maybe has some idea of what is going on, someone who is not out to line their own pockets. Some one who can count above ten (fingers).

We are on our way to a African Greece situation, except no one is going to bail out cANCer and RSA tax payer's

Hey Terence, you know why it is not working and you sure as hell know why nothing is being done to remedy the problems. Don’t sit there all high and mighty! You of all people should know everything the ANC did to “improve” was more a ploy to centralize bribery, corruption and criminality. Only the cANCers can take something that takes 20 minutes and turn it into something that takes a month with no one taking responsibility and no clear policy or procedure and transparency is nonexistent and that is just the way you guys and the cANCers like it. It really irritates me to hear people like you speak big words while you know exactly what is what!

They can't even achieve a clean street, let alone a clean audit!

  • Tim Elliott - 2012-09-11 19:44

This is so sad!Not working but have more get togethers etc., which means more conferences, talk shops, eating and drinking to a standstill and sadly...achieve sweet bugger all!And the poor Taxpayer just gets milked again!
