Johannesburg - Three men, who have been on the run for more than a year, were arrested early on Thursday morning for allegedly burning three other men in March 2014, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

"KwaMashu detectives assisted by the Inanda Tactical Response Team made a breakthrough when they arrested three suspects who have been on the run for more than a year," spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.

"The suspects, aged between 21 and 25 years, were arrested at the KwaMashu Men’s Hostel in the early hours of this morning [Thursday]. They were charged with three counts of murder and are expected to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court tomorrow [Friday]."

Police recovered a cellphone, thought to have been taken during the alleged killings, from the three men.

"On March 21, 2014 at 22:00 19-year-old Vusi Biyela, 18-year-old Anele Kubheka and Sithembiso Makhathini were walking along Nkonjane Road when they were accosted by a group of about five males," Naicker said.

"The suspects demanded cash from their victims, who indicated that they did not have any cash. It is alleged the suspects removed a five-litre container of petrol from the victims and poured it on to them before setting them alight."

Biyela, Kubheka and Makhathini sustained severe injuries and were taken to hospital, where they later died.
