Johannesburg - The trial of a 14-year-old youth accused of murdering his mother and two siblings with an axe and fatally wounding his grandmother is expected to start in the Benoni Magistrate's Court on Friday.

In May, a preliminary inquiry into the matter was held in camera at the Daveyton Magistrate's Court.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Medupe Simasiku said the inquiry was held to determine how to proceed with the case, given that the accused was a minor.

The teenager, who is being kept in a place of safety, allegedly axed to death his mother, 42, and two siblings, aged 7 and 3-months-old, on 24 May.

His grandmother was wounded in the attack and was admitted to the Far East Rand Hospital where she died on 5 July.

The youth's two other siblings, aged 8 and 9, escaped and alerted neighbours.

He fled the scene, but was later arrested and charged.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said at the time that the teenager did not appear in court because he was undergoing psychological evaluation.
