Durban - A man accused of using a hammer to kill a teenager had previously attempted to take his own life twice, the Pinetown Magistrate's court was told on Tuesday.

It also emerged that there was a statement in the docket that Siyanda Gift Ngubane had "heard voices that made him do what he did", prosecutor Vikesh Sewnath told the court.

Sewnath asked the court for the case to be postponed to allow Ngubane to undergo mental observation.

It was then that Magistrate Vanitha Kisten questioned Ngubane's mother, asking her if her son had received any previous treatment for mental illness.

Through a translator she replied that he had not, but said her son had attempted to commit suicide twice.

Ngubane handed himself in to police last week Wednesday at Durban's Hillcrest police station. He then allegedly led officers to an unused manhole in the Embo Reserve. He allegedly told officers that the devil had made him do it.

Kisten postponed the case to April 14 to allow Ngubane to be assessed by the district surgeon. It was not revealed in court who the deceased was or what his relationship with Ngubane was.
