Malelane - Charges were dropped on Monday against three brothers accused of murdering a man, who was believed to have had an affair with their mother, in KaMdladla, near Malelane, Mpumalanga.

Police spokesperson Leonard Hlathi said the charges were dropped before they appeared in the Tonga Magistrate's Court on Monday, a Sapa correspondent reported.

"The siblings have been released after the prosecutor in the case decided it cannot go to court because of lack of evidence," he said.

The brothers, aged between 17 and 21, were arrested on Thursday when the man's body was found hanging from a tree in KaMdladla.

The man was killed on Wednesday and was hanged to make his death look like a suicide.

Hlathi said preliminary investigations had found the dead man, known only as Mhlongo, was apparently dating the brothers' mother, and that their father was aware of this.

"During questioning, their father told police that he tried so many times to stop the boys from doing anything bad to the man."

A post mortem was being conducted to determine the cause of death.

Hlathi said it was suspected that the man was castrated before he was hanged.

"As police, we have started our investigations afresh," said Hlathi.
