Johannesburg - A man murdered in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg, was a drug trafficker and was killed because he owed his suppliers millions, the Saturday Star reported.

This was according to specialist investigator Mike Bolhuis, who is part of a team investigating the death of Bassam Boutrous Issa, the newspaper reported.

Issa, known as Sam Issa, The Cripple, or Black Sam in underworld circles, imported drugs, Bolhuis told the newspaper.

"Issa's main suppliers were in South America," he said.

"He would import cocaine from Brazil to South Africa and those buying in South Africa would then sell to night-clubs and so on. Issa was the middle man in the drug deals."

Bolhuis said information from the underworld indicated that Issa was killed because he apparently owed the suppliers, the newspaper reported.

Issa, a 49-year-old Lebanese citizen, was shot dead a week ago while waiting in his Audi Q7. A white Ford Ranger pulled up next to him and the occupants opened fire and killed him.

Issa was reportedly linked to Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir.
